Santa Clarita Audiologist Nola Aronson from Advanced Audiology is answering a common question about why people should choose a private practice audiology office over a big box store, infomercial or other alternative source.

First, a private practice audiologist like Aronson has to complete at least eight years of schooling, with an additional four years of post-graduate training required to become a doctor of audiology, according to Aronson.
“It’s a lot of time and education spent, and money, so why would we have audiologists if anybody could just do the job?” said Aronson, who has a Master’s Degree in audiology; is certified by the American Hearing and Speech Association and American Academy of Audiology; and is licensed by the state of California in audiology and hearing aid dispensing.

The extensive schooling and training private practice audiologists receive not only help them to be the best in the field at tailoring hearing loss solutions to each individual person’s needs, it also gives them the ability to make an actual diagnosis when it comes to hearing loss, according to Aronson.
“You need to make sure you really do need a hearing aid, or maybe you have wax in your ears, maybe you have fluid in your ears, maybe one of your bones has disconnected and maybe you just need medical treatment,” she said. “But who’s going to tell you that if they’re trying to sell you a hearing aid (at a big box store)?”
Licensed audiologists are not in the business of simply “selling” hearing aids like big box stores and infomercial companies may be, and instead want to provide the education and hearing loss solutions for their patients to help offer the best quality of life possible, according to Aronson.
“We’re there to solve a problem,” she said. “You come to us (because) you’re having trouble in your life. We want to help you with your life.”
While cost may be lower when choosing alternatives to private practice audiology offices, Aronson noted that these hearing devices are typically significantly lower quality, and that the prices at her office reflect the manufacturer costs rather than a profit.
“We’re not making money hand over fist on hearing aids,” she said. “People have to realize we’re beholden to the manufacturer too, and they spend a lot of money on their research and delivery… When you buy a hearing aid that’s less money, it’s because it is less quality.”
As per state law, a trial period is given for all hearing devices for at least 45 days, which Aronson encourages her patients to use in their regular environments so they can come back for any necessary adjustments before actually buying the hearing aid.
“If somebody doesn’t say to me, ‘Nola, I just appreciate so much how you’ve changed my life,’ I’m not happy,” Aronson said. “I’ll keep going until somebody tells me that.”
