Although the holiday season is set to be a little different this year, the Santa Clarita City Council held a virtual “Light Up Main Street” event to kick off the season with a bit of holiday cheer.
Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth thanked members of the community watching the virtual event, streamed live from Old Town Newhall, declared the “premier arts and entertainment district of Santa Clarita.”
Normally, thousands of residents would join the City Council for a night of revelry for the annual Light Up Main Street celebration, the event that kicks off the holiday season in Santa Clarita.
There residents can enjoy musical performances, one-of-a-kind activities, photos and of course, the ceremonial lighting of the tree. With the looming COVID-19 pandemic and health officer orders, the ceremony looked a little different in 2020.
“As we all know, due to the current health restrictions it is not possible for all of us to come together in person as a community,” said Smyth. “But we can come together virtually, which is why we’re here tonight. To try to bring some holiday spirit and joy and a little bit of normalcy to our community.”
Smyth encouraged residents to view the lights in person, and to take the chance to dine at local favorites, shop at locally owned businesses, and stroll along Main Street while absorbing the holiday cheer and festive atmosphere of Old Town Newhall.
City officials remind visitors to adhere to safety protocols, including maintaining social distance and wearing a face covering around those that are not part of your immediate household.
Among new sights that visitors to Old Town Newhall can look forward to this holiday season are tens of thousands of lights arranged down Main Street, including a light tunnel, ribbon arches, and a Christmas tree in front of the Old Town Newhall Library.
The decorations along Main Street were arranged and installed by local decorator Jeanna Crawford, whose work can be found here.

Sounds nice! But, will there be a 24/7 security there to protect from the insanities of BLM/Antifa/devil worshippers/Liberals/gang bangers/etc. trying to tear down decent society?
Jojo…really? Do you HAVE to be a grumpy grinch ALL YEAR? Can you just give it a rest? Ugh. Why are you so miserable?
Trish the Naive excuser: We are grumpy with the increasing crime, violence and racial problems! Just warning by telling the truth/facts of that area and peaceful life.
