How To Deodorize Carpets For That Fresh Smell

Carpets have to withstand a lot, from spills to dust to pet dander. It’s no wonder then that over time they can begin to feel musty. Even when you vacuum regularly, odors can linger. But don’t get rid of your carpet just yet, because there are plenty of ways to deodorize carpets and banish nasty smells.

Try enzyme cleaner

As part of a thorough deep-cleaning routine for carpets, enzyme cleaners shouldn’t be missing. These are especially useful when you have pets and are looking to banish urine smells from your carpet. You can find enzyme cleaners in most DIY and homeware stores. Best of all, they aren’t just great for nasty smells, they also eliminate stains like blood and vomit.

Baking soda

Bicarbonate of soda is a staple for many households. That’s because it’s a very effective way to banish nasty odors. Simply sprinkle a generous amount of the bicarbonate of soda on the carpet. Allow it to settle for two hours or overnight, depending on how strong the odor is, and then vacuum the carpet. Baking soda is also among the best methods to get rid of coffee stains from carpets. White vinegar

Another proven home ‘remedy’ to treat nasty smells in carpets is white vinegar. It’s a more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way to weaken bad smells. Mix a cup of vinegar with two cups of warm water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle and then spritz the mixture onto your carpet. Allow it to dry. Add a tablespoon of baking soda for an even more powerful solution.

Carpet shampoo

Where vinegar and baking soda fail, carpet shampoo may be your best option. These are specially formulated for use with carpet cleaners. If your carpet needs a deep-clean, these are usually your best bet. Different brands and scents are available in-store and online. But bear in mind that you’ll be needing a carpet cleaner to work in the shampoo. You can rent or purchase one of these powerful machines. Buying one makes sense if your carpet gets dirty often.

Prevent a smelly carpet

Aside from regularly deep-cleaning your carpet and using vinegar or baking soda to eliminate odors, the best strategy is still to explore ways to prevent carpet smells in the first place. This includes regularly ventilating a room, cleaning your carpets thoroughly at least once a week and getting rid of spills right after they happen. Don’t wait for stains to dry as that may intensify their odor.
