KHTS Adopt A Pet: Kayla And Puppies, Shelter Hope Pet Shop Santa Clarita (VIDEO)

Just one day after arriving at the shelter, 2-year-old Kayla gave birth to three puppies, leaving herself and her newborn babies at risk of being euthanized because of the extra care they needed. But volunteers from Shelter Hope Pet Shop Santa Clarita stepped in right away to save the new family’s lives.

“(Moms and babies) are typically high-risk in the shelter, so we go and … get them out and get them to safety,” said Dani Caouette, the rescue’s owner. “We got them out at one day old, and now they’re 10 weeks old. So they’re all looking for homes, and Mama is looking for her home as well.”KHTS Adopt a Pet Kayla

Kayla is an incredibly easygoing pup who loves to give kisses, play with other dogs and get love from kids, and Caouette noted she would make a great family dog.

“She can fit right into any home,” Caouette said. “The first thing she did when I met her is she started giving me kisses. She was amazing even with her babies… She’s just perfect.”

The puppies — two boys and a girl named Sheldon, Lionel and Skylar — are filled with playful puppy energy, with Skylar a bit shyer than her brothers.

“They’re all puppy love, ready to find their homes,” Caouette said. “We’re just finishing up with their vaccines and then they’ll be spayed and neutered as soon as they’re old enough.”

While Kayla is already potty-trained, spayed and up-to-date on vaccines, the puppies will require more of a time commitment as they grow up, according to Caouette.

“We tell people, make sure that you have enough time to dedicate to training,” she said. “There’s potty training, they’re going to go through teething and finishing up with getting fixed… But Mama, if you want somebody that’s easygoing, that’s already potty trained, that’s not going to chew on your furniture or anything, this is the girl for you.”

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series

Every Wednesday, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase nearly 100 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 76 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by Melissa Lampert-Abramovitch, who has more than 10 years of experience in the animal rescue world and co-founded Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary in Santa Clarita in 2016.
