Nikova — who lost her eyesight to glaucoma and later needed to have her eyes removed — took the spotlight in the series on Oct. 18, and less than a week later appeared on IHeartDogs.com with her KHTS Adopt a Pet video.

“Nikova is a super friendly, super sweet, no-eyed pit bull,” said Haley Walsh, co-founder and CEO of Tails and Scales Animal Rescue. “She lost her sight in Sept. 2015 and ultimately had to have her eyes removed, but this doesn’t slow her down — she is still as friendly and excited as ever.”

Despite having waited for her forever home for most of her life, Nikova became an instant internet sensation after her spotlight. Tails and Scales was suddenly flooded with inquiries and adoption applications from across the country — and even internationally.

After carefully sorting through all the potential adopters interested in making Nikova a part of their family, a woman ultimately chosen by Tails and Scales Animal Rescue as the best fit for the pup travelled across state lines to Santa Clarita to meet her new best friend.

Then after 1,056 days with the rescue, Walsh made the official announcement that Nikova was heading to her new home in Arizona on Nov. 19.

“Today … Nikova makes her long trip home to Arizona to live a long, happy and loved life,” Walsh wrote in a Facebook post. “Tears of joy will be shed but we couldn’t be happier for Nikova and her new mom!”

A little over a week after her adoption, Walsh reported that Nikova was adjusting well.

“She is doing well with her new kitty siblings and she has already mapped out most, if not all, of her new home,” she said, referring to Nikova’s way of memorizing her surroundings. “We are forever grateful for her adopters and so happy for our special girl!”

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series

Every Wednesday, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase more than 40 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 30 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by Features Director Melissa Lampert, who has more than 10 years of experience in the animal rescue world and co-founded Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary in Santa Clarita in 2016.
