Santa Clarita Mayor Pro Tem Bill Miranda Statement On Racism

By Bill Miranda: Santa Clarita Mayor Pro Tem

I want to state unequivocally, and as a City Councilmember, that I am against all forms of bullying and racism. I am against all supremacist groups, hate groups and any individuals that indulge them. As Mayor Pro Tem, I am working with many segments of our community to end these despicable practices.

One cannot look at the history of our country without regrettably acknowledging that slavery was an unfortunate part of its beginning. Generations of African Americans have been severely impacted by the racism spawned by slavery. It’s precisely racism that has disadvantaged African Americans, limiting their access to education and economic opportunities provided to the rest of Americans. In my lifetime I have seen significant progress made in both those areas, but it’s still not enough.

We can and need to do more. And it all starts with ending racism.

The cry against the evils of racism are now heard throughout our country. It has reached the point of one of the most impactful movements in our country’s history. I understand that the focal point today has to do with Black interactions with police. The death of George Floyd and others were tragic and needless violations of human rights and disrespectful policing. Those found to be guilty must be punished to the fullest extent of the law. But this is a movement beyond just confrontations with police.

This is a movement for the hearts and souls of Americans of all kinds. Do we in fact want a country where all men (people) are created equal? Do we want a country where there is opportunity for all? Do we want a country where our kids and grandkids can learn together and play together without the fear of bullying and racist acts? Of course we do!

To have that country we must be vigilant. And vigilance starts with a look into the mirror. Let us each look and ask if what we think, feel and do combats racism or promotes it. Did we tell a tasteless joke? Did we judge people on the basis of their color? Did we tolerate others when they said racist things? We must change our paradigm and the way we think. It’s not enough for us to avoid being racists, we must become warriors against racism and combat it wherever it rears its ugly head.

How do we know if our behavior is racist? Beyond the obvious, we need to ask those most impacted by racism. We need to reach out to them and commence a dialog where we listen and learn from them. We don’t determine what is racist, they do because they are the ones who are most hurt by racism.

How about each of us start by taking a personal oath, one that we commit not just to others, but to ourselves: “I will not think, feel or do racist things nor tolerate those that do.” That would be a good first step toward ending racism as we know it.

  1. Miranda, YOU are the problem! What a condescending monologue!
You want me to take an oath? Ok, how about this, to work hard, treat everybody equal until they prove they don’t deserve it, be honest, don’t steal or loot or riot, protect my family and help my neighbors. And that is my privilege.
And praise God for this great country.

  2. Wow. Who is this guy? First off, stop bending over for the “few”. Yes racism exists… to ALL races. That’s why ALL LIVES MATTER. I’m capable of monitoring my own actions. I don’t need any politician telling me how to act. I don’t need any politician telling me who I am. I certainly don’t need any politician telling me to apologize for being something I am not. I do not need anyone telling me to be “sorry” for being born the a certain color. I believe most people are not racist. I find it interesting that after generations of having better opportunities offered, some people feel they are being oppressed. Oppression is a state of mind. If you allow yourself, no matter what race you are, to be oppressed and not to take opportunities you’re given to better your life, shame on you. Don’t blame others for your inadequacy.

    • “oppression is a state of mind” said an ignorant privileged white woman who never had someone kneeling on her neck for a minor infraction until dead. You have no idea from what people of color endure from your ivory tower. Shame on you.

  3. The government SUPPORTS RACISM by the very nature of the things it does in an attempt to eradicate it. Stop giving preferential treatment to non-whites. Make all qualifications for education to higher learning exactly the same just like the rules are in sports. If there is a conflict between two people their races need not be reported so that some rogue organization posing as a caring group of individuals can incite riots and violence in the name of racism. Stop bowing down to such organizations. DO NOT allow lawlessness in the name of fighting for “Equality.”Teach real American history of slavery, The resistance from the Democrat Party to end slavery, the starting of the Ku Klux Klan by members of the Democrat Party, The struggle of the first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, to end slavery.
Rodney King asked the question, “Can’t we all just get along?” I reality the answer is no. Before you get all over my case just take a look for yourself. Would you get along with a gang member when he wants you to participate in some criminal act? Is there a neighbor or coworker that you never socialize with because the guy is just a jerk? Now if that person happens to have a different skin color than yours does that make you a racist? It’s easy to make the problem of racism look way larger than it is and our government fuels the fire.

  4. Thank you Bill for expressing the need to make our community better and to make America better. Evidently we still have a problem with communications and we are 20 years into the 21st century.

  5. White supremacy is finished. Karens and their spineless husbands are being put in their place all over the country, we’re not playing around with these people any more . I myself have had to check a few Karen and husband duos myself here in the SCV.

Be vigilant my peoples and beware, these coward
Karen and husband duos will attack when they feel you are most vulnerable, when you have your toddler and infant children with you. It happened to me, they got in the face of my pregnant wife who was also holding a 3 year old toddler and all on my property. I proceeded to exit my vehicle, back~handed the Karen and proceeded to put a beat down on her spineless husband who used her as a human shield. That’s how you treat this trash.

    • How dare people stop putting up with this crap behavior from their fellow citizens? How dare you stop putting up with this crap from this trash? How dare you speak up to these people in this tone? Who are you? Who do you think you are? Is this pushback emboldening you to do so? My goodness. Good for you. I’m done with this sh*t. F this. Watch out people. Some want equality but others want revenge. F you if you think this editorial is something other than a “let’s be nice and thoughtful to each other, ” piece. Yes, there are people out there, like you, that need to be reminded of such a basic human behaviour. I’m out of here. F this and F you all.

  6. Councilman Miranda…I appreciate that you made an effort to open a dialog that would lead to the eradication of racism in our city. Your intent was good, your execution was solid, your words were humble…however, based on the reactions you are getting, clearly this town will never join you in your sentiments.

Especially when you protect your own “proud racist,” Councilman Double Down. As long as he is on council and not specifically taken to task for recent comments (not the 10 year old proud racist comment), racism will be accepted in City Hall.

  7. Well the hate is alive and well here in SCV. Glad to hear you racist crackers are still out here. I see you. And I know you see my bean*r ass. Good. At least everything is out on the table.

  8. Jim has done more for this valley than you’ll ever know. If you did, you wouldn’t address him in that tone. How dare you? The fact that you don’t know who he is tells me that you are some “recent” arrival. Don’t bring your garbage here. This is a good man that deserves to be addressed with reverence.

  9. Playing the “Race Card” is a form of “bullying “ and excusing responsibility for bad behavior! Why isn’t Jussie Smollett the President of BLM!? Those 2 fools from Bergie’s never used a race in their rant, only 2 areas of people of many races, that have chosen bad behavior to degenerate areas that resemble 3rd world countries! All races should have respect for their communities so they don’t deteriorate into slums.

  10. The above commentors are reacting out of a place of fear.

It is difficult to accept that you are part of the problem, and so when someone stands a gainst racism, as our city council member fortunately finally felt the need to do, people feel attacked.
He is not attacking you, if you feel attacked it is because of your own shame of being complicit in this situation and your reluctance to do anything to better the lives of those living under the oppression of systematic racism.

If you don’t want to be called racist, stop doing racist things. There is not much more too it.

I didn’t think I’d ever say this, but thank you, City Council Member Miranda.

  11. HAYdrSUESS C.: Oh no, oh golly gosh, oh my goodness—-You used another, inexcusable racist word, “cracker” against the evil white peoples and then you used another horrible inexcusable racist word against your people “beaner”—Oh my goodness, how could that be?!?! Once again, racist come in ALL colors!!

    • Sounds like you’re the snowflake now. I use the word cracker much in the same way that some of you use the word n*gger or w*tback… you know when they can’t be put in their place or whatnot. Somebody who doesn’t know their place in our society. Much the same so what’s the big deal? I’m okay with using those words and I’m not letting some small town politician or resident tell me what to say. My opinion matters as much as yours.
