Supporting Michele Jenkins — Carol Quan — October 14, 2020

By: Carol Quan

As a resident of the Santa Clarita Valley for 42 years, I have witnessed how College of the Canyons has benefited everyone in our community. We are fortunate that COC has developed into one of the finest community colleges not only in California but in the country. I would like to remind everyone about our amazing college and how it came to be so.

College of the Canyons is a top-tier institution because of the vision, dedication and persistence of courageous leaders like Board of Trustees President Michele Jenkins, who has devoted more than 30 years of her life to making sure COC meets and exceeds the community’s needs – and is positioned to continue doing so well into the future.

Michele Jenkins has played a key role in developing the Canyon Country Campus and its new Science Center, Academy of the Canyons, the Institue for Culinary Education, the Economic Development Division and its numerous subsidiary agencies. These programs have impacted my family in many ways. All four of my children benefited from classes at COC during high school. These classes not only improved their GPA, but unlike AP classes, universities were required to accept these classes for full credit.  One of my daughters was one of the first graduates of Academy of the Canyons. The quality of the teachers impressed her so much, that after a BA at Mount St Mary’s and MA at American University, she became a credentialed teacher utilizing Laverne University’s classes on COC’s campus.  Since then, she has been teaching first grade in our community.

Personally, I have utilized COC’s employment website to recruit employees for the cardiology office that I work for. In addition, I completed the “Spanish for Medical Professionals” class. Utilizing these skills as an RN, our office is better able to provide quality healthcare to all members of our community. Many times we forget how much COC has assisted us in improving our lives.

I urge you to keep College of the Canyons on track – and maintain its standing as one of the best community colleges in the country — by re-electing Michele Jenkins to District 4 of the Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees.
