Board Of Supervisors Approve Motion For Blue Ribbon Commission On Homelessness

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion to create a Blue Ribbon Commission on Homelessness during their regular meeting on Tuesday.

Announced on Tuesday, the commission was created by Supervisor Kathryn Barger and co-authored by Supervisor Hilda L. Solis.

The Blue Ribbon Commission would assess the existing structures and systems and to provide recommendations on reforms according to county officials.

“This Blue Ribbon Commission will be critical to help the County, in partnership with our 88 cities, identify the reforms and changes needed and to move forward with actions that can finally help our vulnerable residents who are suffering on the streets,” Barger said.

Barger acknowledged the urgency of action towards the 740 unhoused individuals who have died this year.

Supervisor Janice Hahn offered a “friendly amendment” to expand the makeup of the commission and is said to have been accepted by Supervisors Barger and Solis.

The Composition is said to include 12 members appointed as such:

  • Five appointed by each supervisor
  • Three nominated by the LA City Council President
  • Two nominated by the councils of Government
  • One nominated by the Contract Cities Association
  • One nominated by the mayor of the county

“I am grateful for the outpouring of community support and advocacy to create the Blue Ribbon Commission on Homelessness,” Barger said. “Our cities and partners know this Commission will provide the urgent all-hands-on-deck approach this crisis requires.”

Blue Ribbon Commission Appointees are set to be presented to the Board of Supervisors by August 10th and are prepared to convene immediately in order to begin their research, officials said.

  1. So the Composition is said to include 12 members appointed by,
    Five appointed by each supervisor
Three nominated by the LA City Council President
Two nominated by the councils of Government
One nominated by the Contract Cities Association
One nominated by the mayor of the county
So many spots to fill, and so few qualified people to choose them, Dag…

  2. Help create good Mental Health places.

Until the mental health issues are addressed, no matter the funds nor the number of folks on the “Composition” This problem will continue. Why not create more beds for the mentally ill, get them REAL
help so they can take back their lives and be productive citizens? NO homeless place will accept the druggie
nor the folks on booze. So where IS that money really going.

  3. So if I understand this correctly, 88 cities will each have 12 members on “blue ribbon commission” and these people are being paid a LOT for doing this (not volunteers) as political perks and this will take a while to conduct this assessment…….This is where all the money goes. Does not help the homeless, it helps friends of politicians increase their wealth. A billion dollars could make a dent in the homeless problem in LA County only. However, the real problem is 75% of the homeless choose to live this way because there are no rules on how they behave. Some people with mental problems can be helped with medication but you cannot force people to take their medication. California’s problem with homelessness is because of the weather. It is generally mild so living outdoors works for these people. A lot of these people have funds because they seem to be able to acquire tents and a whole lot of stuff. Philosophically, I think “idiot compassion” has fueled this problem more than anything. You can’t just throw money at a problem. You have to get involved physically and emotionally, one on one, and no one wants to be a homeless person’s best friend.
