Gun Store Closure Remains In Effect In L.A. County After Sheriff Confers With Governor

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced Thursday that gun and ammunition stores would be closed down after suspending his initial efforts to close “nonessential” businesses as he waited for Governor Gavin Newsom to clarify what businesses were deemed essential.

Villanueva took to Twitter Thursday morning to announce the decision to close gun and ammunition stores.

“After the governor’s clarification yesterday about what my authority was in this subject, we definitely are going to proceed forward,” Villanueva said in a press conference Thursday. “We’re going to shut down gun sales and ammunition sales outside of law enforcement and private security organizations.”

The order does come with several exceptions. Stores will still be allowed to sell ammunition to security guard companies. Additionally, individuals who have already purchased a firearm will be allowed to pick up and take possession of it, granted that they have attained a California Firearms Safety Certificate.

“I conferred with the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Association (LACPCA) and they support my decision to direct that action in the 42 contract cities and unincorporated Los Angeles County areas under the Sheriff’s jurisdiction,” Villanueva wrote in the order.

The announcement comes just over 24 hours after Villanueva announced that he would suspend efforts to close nonessential businesses.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom to determine what qualifies as a non-essential business,” he said in a tweet on Wednesday morning.

Villanueva had previously issued a similar order on Tuesday, but that was later suspended after a reported clash with county officials, according to officials.

“I’m a supporter of the 2nd amendment; I’m a gun owner myself,” Villanueva said on Tuesday. “But now you have the mixture of people that are not formerly gun owners and you have a lot more people at home, and any time you introduce a firearm in a home, from what I understand from CDC studies, it increases fourfold the chance that someone is going to get shot.”

Gun Store Closure Remains In Effect In L.A. County After Sheriff Confers With Governor

  1. I want the gun stores open purely so people who have never owned one can go and be told they can’t have one because of the laws in the State of California. The media routinely lies about how “it’s easier to buy an military assault rifle than it is to buy a pack of diapers.” I want people to get an education about the 10-day wait, the “one gun per 30 days” rule, the tests that have to be passed, the expensive background checks, the DOJ roster of handguns, the ammo purchase laws, the refusal to issue a CCA, the storage laws… and the list goes on and on.
I think that’s why Villanueva closed the gun stores. It’s certainly not to prevent anyone from buying anything, it’s to prevent people from finding out what it’s really like.

  2. Villanueva and the governor seem like they are operating as communist dictators under the guise of public safety. Gun shops are essential as we may find out when more than just toilet paper and bottled water run out and rioting and looting begin.
As we have seen historically police have limited resources to fight off such uprisings. Self protection will be the main source if not the only source of your personal protection.
I see this as another test of the public’s willingness to give up constitutional rights to the government without a fight. There have been infringements on the freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and the right to bear arms. It won’t stop here………..

  3. Liquor stores are open, but close gun stores?
My 2nd Amendment Rights have been trampled upon.

  4. Anyone who cites the CDC (Center for Disease Control) as an authority on gun violence is NOT a supporter of the 2nd AMENDMENT. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!

  5. Politicians and local Sheriff’s cannot overrule the US Constitution by attempting to void the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment was not written to give the people the right to keep and bear arms during good times only. It was in fact written to give the people that right in anticipation of bad times and in particular against bad government. In times like this it is particularly important that the people be able to buy and replace guns and ammunition. The people’s ability to protect their families and neighbors in these uncertain times is critical to a free society

  7. Let’s play a game.

    Let 1700 inmates run free.

Prevent citizens from protecting themselves from the freed inmates.

Sit in you office and watch ciaos ensue.

Demand the governor increase your pay to stop said ciaos.

  8. This is out of control, why because the people voted for all the idiots in Sacarmento. You voted for the drug dealers and users to stay out of jail, and the 3 strike rule you voted to raise taxes, you believe idiiots like Newsome, Obama, and any one that will give you free stuff. But in the end you have to pay it back, some how some way, remember you voted these idiots in. you voted to let the government control your life. They work for us. My constitution is there for a reason. I do have the right to protect my property, no trespassing law and my family, the sheriff’s and politicians ain’t gonna help you. They are to busy helping themselves to your money and taking away your rights. That’s why your freedom is slowly disappearing, we are turning into a 3rd world country run by dictators of the wrong kind, this is AMERICA if you want some governor like Newsome to run you then move to a 3rd world country and see how you like it. Stop touching the constitution you morons.

  9. @Bobbyg – you could not have said it better… People, in this state, and many across the nation, are too stupid to vote… But, the DUMBocraps LOVE these imbeciles because they don’t know any better, because they vote-in these idiots in office !!!

  10. Thanks Gascon & Liberal ilk that authored Prop. 47 & 57 and AB 109—reducing felonies to misdemeanors and letting criminals out of jail early!! When your husband, you & your children get raped, beat up, robbed & murdered, BLAME yourselves for this society degradation!! Speak up and stop the Liberal degradation of once wonderful society!!
