College of the Canyons Cougar Stadium was swarmed by walkers proudly wearing Tshirts with anti-cancer slogans in honor of the effort. “Sunblock stinks Cancer Stins More” was one of the many colorful offerings dedicated to the fight against the disease.
“We had 1,025 (walkers) signed up for this morning,” said Hoefflin Foundation Executive Director Gillian Stone, noting the walk and another fundraiser in the fall are the nonprofit’s two main sources for funding.
Whether they were walking to volunteer time, support a sponsorship or just enjoy a picturesque Santa Clarita Valley Saturday across the college’s trail, strollers, walkers began at 9 a.m. with a loop around the track before setting off through the campus.
The event is one of the nonprofit’s two biggest fundraisers of the year, along with An Evening Under the Stars, which takes place in September each year.
The foundation’s goal was reached with news of the $95,000 raised as of the start of Saturday morning, but it looks as though organizers even exceeded that total as it didn’t include walk-ups and any other non-preregistered runners.
The foundation provides grant funding for innovative pediatric cancer research, programs for outreach and family support and public education related to childhood cancer, according to its website.
