Assemblywoman Christy Smith, D-Santa Clarita, announced Thursday that three of her education bills passed the California State Senate, clearing a key hurdle in their journey to becoming law.
The education bills address issues of sexual harassment, exam fees and high school enrollment in college courses.

The following bills received unanimous support and are now awaiting the governor’s signature:
Assembly Bill (AB) 543 makes information and resources on sexual harassment prevention and procedures more accessible to high school students. Sexual harassment policies would be required to be posted prominently on educational campuses to provide students with resources and guidelines for addressing issues.
AB 1233 waives Advanced Placement (AP) exam fees for low-income students and foster youth. It would establish a grant program to help pay for part or the entirety of the cost of examinations, according to the bill.
AB 1729 would allow a greater number of high school students to enroll in certain community college courses during the summer, helping students get ahead on college course requirements. The bill, sponsored by College of the Canyons, would allow an exception for the 5 percent grade level rule of high school student enrollment in community college courses, according to officials.
“As a lifelong education advocate, I’m proud my bills will contribute to advancing the best student outcomes,” Smith said in a statement. “These bills promote a safe environment in schools, equity in standardized testing and greater pathways to higher education. I look forward to their signing into law.”
