Assemblywoman Valladares’ Wildfire Mitigation Proposal Included In CA Budget

Assemblywoman Suzette Martinez Valladares, R-Santa Clarita, announced today that her proposal to strengthen California’s wildfire prevention measures was included in a recently amended state budget trailer bill.

“As each year passes, more acres are burned, more homes and businesses are destroyed, and most tragically of all, more lives are lost,” said Valladares. “This proposal will reduce the severity of wildfires, mitigate the destruction and loss of life, and return our lands and forests to normal healthy conditions.”

Assemblywoman Valladares introduced AB 267 in 2021 to extend the implementation of a crucial California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) exemption for fuel reduction projects on federal lands that have been reviewed under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This policy proposal, which ensures that California makes meaningful progress on its wildfire prevention goals, has now been incorporated into a public resources budget trailer bill.

Since its introduction, AB 267 has passed through Assembly and Senate policy committees with widespread bipartisan support and has received praise from numerous environmental groups and public safety organizations, including the Nature Conservancy, California Professional Firefighters, and the California Fire Chiefs Association.

“We owe it to all Californians to reduce the impact of wildfires on our community,” said Valladares. “Wildfire prevention is an important step towards that goal.”

The policy “helps avoid unnecessary delay and ensure that forest health projects on federal land can move forward quickly,” wrote representatives from Pacific Forest Trust, Watershed Research & Training Center, and the Nature Conservancy in favor of the proposal. “It is critically important for the state and federal government to work together to address forest health and reduce wildfire risk.”

Within the last few years, California has experienced an unprecedented number of large and destructive wildfires. Six of the ten most destructive wildfires in state history occurred within the last two years, including the Camp and Tubbs Fires.

Assemblywoman Valladares’ bipartisan policy proposal’s inclusion in the budget trailer bill will help California continue its wildfire prevention efforts by streamlining needed fuel reduction projects in federal forests.
