The race has been one of the closest in the history of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department with Villanueva leading over 57,000 votes as of Friday afternoon.

“We are thrilled about today’s results from the LA County Registrar in the race for Sheriff. With the recent counts showing our lead continuing to grow, it’s clear that Los Angeles County voters are ready to reform, rebuild, and restore the LA County Sheriff’s Department,” said Villanueva.

It has been more than 100 years since anyone managed to unseat an incumbent Los Angeles County Sheriff.

The two are vying to head the largest Sheriff’s department in the country, with almost 18,000 employees and about 10,000 sworn deputies.

As of Friday, Villanueva had 1,112,673 votes giving him the lead with 51.33 percent. McDonnell earned 1,054,863 votes, trailing behind with 48.67 percent.

“While our lead grows and we become more confident, we remain cautiously optimistic and take nothing for granted. The Alex Villanueva for LA County Sheriff team, like the rest of Los Angeles, awaits the final results from the LA County Registrar,” he said.

The campaign for Villanueva remains “cautiously optimistic,” and is willing to stay until the election is certified, said Danny Leserman, a spokesperson for the campaign.

“We feel good as we are moving forward,” Leserman said. “The campaign is in it until the end as the ballots are still being counted.”

The Los Angeles County Registrar has up to 30 days from the Nov. 6 election to certify the results.
