Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, is honoring several prominent leaders from Senate District 21 who have dedicated their lives to helping their communities by uplifting families and students during Black History Month.
The honorees recognized this Black History Month are De’chane “Dey” Yusef from the Antelope Valley, Kei Kei Lee from the Santa Clarita Valley and Barbara Dew from Victor Valley.
“Black History Month is an acknowledgment and celebration of the Black experiences, achievements and contributions that define this nation and make it great,” Wilk said. “This month, I’m honored to highlight three exceptional individuals. Whether it’s by creating better educational opportunities, supporting families through nonprofits or continuing the pursuit of knowledge, this month’s honorees make it their mission to see their loved ones and communities thrive. Congratulations to this year’s recipients Barbara Dew, Kei Kei Lee and De’chane “Dey” Yusef.”
De’chane “Dey” Yusef from Antelope Valley started the nonprofit E&E Love Foundation where she helps to foster youth and struggling families putting loved ones to rest that help can come in the form of grief support, burials, celebrations of life and assistance with financial obligations.
Kei Kei Lee launched Coco Moms of Santa Clarita, another non-profit that was started to help other parents by creating health awareness.
Barbara Dew works for the district in Victorville for its students and their families by being a reliable presence.

He leaders of America needs to stop focusing on race. Every race is important and has their own history. Honestly this is getting ridiculous if we’re going to have black history month then every race needs their own month.
So you don’t get that we have a country where slavery, prejudice and bigotry have cost black people respect and acknowledgment. “Black History Month” first started as “Negro History Week” in 1925, almost 100 YEARS ago.Later, in 1976, President Gerald Ford turned it into a month.
Also, there are other dedicated dates where other races are the focus, but you probably haven’t noticed or cared.
Ann in Wonderland, Over the centuries many ethnicities have been enslaved & worked hard with strength, fortitude & decency to overcome adversity without constant “chips on the shoulder” to succeed rather than choose to fail & blame others!
The whole point of Black History Month is to highlight those who did succeed in difficult circumstances. No one is being honored for “choosing to fail,” to use your words.
