Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, was appointed Thursday to the House Committee on Homeland Security, marking his third committee assignment, officials said.
The Homeland Security Committee was created in 2002 in the aftermath of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Formed initially as a select, non-permanent Committee to provide Congressional oversight over the development of the Department of Homeland Security, the Committee was made permanent when it was designated a Standing Committee in January of 2005, according to Garcia’s office.
“As a former front-line combat veteran, I am honored to be selected to sit on this prestigious committee,” said Garcia. “There is no greater responsibility of the United States Congress, in my mind, than that of ensuring the protection and security of our nation. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle towards that honorable endeavor.”

This is Garcia’s third committee assignment. He also sits on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure as well as the Committee on Science, Space and Technology, according to his office.
“I am pleased to welcome Congressman Garcia to the Homeland Security Committee,” Congressman Mike Rogers (AL-03), the Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge that will be valuable to our Committee. I am confident that Congressman Garcia will hit the ground running on our important committee work and will be a strong advocate as we work to secure our borders and combat emerging threats.”
The House Committee on Homeland Security oversees several tasks including border security, immigration, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, intelligence, emergency preparedness, among others.
