Christy Smith Holds Slight Fundraising Lead Over Mike Garcia Ahead Of Special Election

As the May 12 special election for California’s 25th Congressional seat approaches, Assemblywoman Christy Smith, D-Santa Clarita, reported a slight fundraising lead over Republican opponent and Navy veteran, Mike Garcia.

On Wednesday, Smith’s campaign reported that they had raised $726,522.02 between Feb.13 and March 31.

“Over her career in public service, Christy has demonstrated her track record of fiscal responsibility and bipartisan work, and that she is a leader voters can trust,” said Lexie Kelly, spokeswoman for the campaign. “In these uncertain times, Americans want leaders like Christy representing them in Congress, and we see that reflected in the fact that she is once again the top fundraiser in this race. We are thankful to our grassroots contributors who power this campaign, and look forward to continuing to share Christy’s vision with the residents of CA-25.”

Meanwhile, Garcia’s campaign reported a total of $706,055.26 raised during the same time period, roughly $20,000 less than Smith.

“The more people learn about the two candidates in the race — Mike Garcia is a former Navy fighter pilot who believes taxes are out of control, versus Liberal politician Christy Smith, who hasn’t met a tax she didn’t want to raise — the more people know Mike is the best choice for Congress,” said Lance Trover, spokesperson for the Garcia campaign. “Mike is pro-business and pro-taxpayer and understands what is needed for our country and our district during this critical era in American history. “

While Smith came slightly ahead of Garica in terms of fundraising, the former Navy fighter pilot has more cash on hand than Smith by a larger margin. Garcia’s campaign reported having a cash-on-hand total of $446,742.53 — nearly $100,000 more than Smith’s reported $357,256.52.

However, this is offset by the debts and obligations owed by each campaign, with Garcia having a total of $152,395.33 left to pay, while Smith has $12,129.64 worth of expenses left to pay.

Every registered voter in the district is expected to receive a Vote-by-Mail ballot in accordance with an executive order issued by Governor Gavin Newsom in March in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

For a Vote-by-Mail ballot to be counted, voters must return their ballot on or have it postmarked by Election Day, May 12, according to officials.

Voters are expected to have access to 22 drop box locations, open 24 hours a day, throughout the district.

The full list of drop box locations for the election is available here.

  1. Christy Smith is Katie Hill, just with a different name.

  2. You go Christy beat that trump backer. Be good for us here in school. Kick his butt

  3. Here’s a handy guide to help you make an informed decision when you vote.

Mike Garcia has wonderful, beautiful slogans worthy of a bumper sticker on your GMC.

Christy Smith has ideas and visionary plans that will aid our lives and benefit society.

    It’s your choice to make.

    • Here is the bottom Line.

Mike Garcia will lower your taxes. Mike will put people back to work. Mike will reduce the influx of illegal aliens that are coming here and sending our public schools into the sewer.

Christy Smith will increase your taxes and close small business. As a member of the California legislature she voted for every tax measure, and voted for AB 5 that put many workers out of a job. Here support is coming from Government workers who want you to pay more taxes to pay their salaries and benefits.

  4. If it was truly only Santa Clarita voting, Mike Garcia would win hands down! But with all the gerrymandering that has gone on, the Valley now has a say in our election. So wrong. Hopefully, Garcia still wins, we can’t afford to elect Democrats, that have as their main goal, saving their party and not the country!

  5. Katie Hill was only in office for 11 months. Howard McKeon was in office from 1993 to 2015 and then Steve Knight was in office from 1993 to 2015. When Garcia says he wants to change high taxes and the homeless. It was republicans that put us in the situation . As we are finding out the truth we find republicans cannot govern.

  6. Bring honesty, decency, & integrity back to the 25th. We seriously don’t need another tRump boot licking yes man. Do you feel safer than you did 4 yrs ago? I don’t! Someone once said that they were the last thing standing between us and the apocalypse, sadly they were right… End this nightmare. Vote for Christy.

Vote for CHRISTY SMITH! If for no other reason, do it so I can say “Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington”. It makes me happy.

  7. she ran a fundraiser, this isn’t girl scouts or a school function, lets see if she can do it with out handouts…
I feel way more safer with Trump than Obama, Hill, Biden, Newsome Brown, at least Trump fights for our country and not hand over millions of dollars to drug addicts, illegals no matter what side if the border north east west or south… wake up. Garcia is our Man

  8. End this nightmare, vote for Christy. As many democrats in office as possible!!! Oust Immoral Trump. We can do better, and end lies and bluster at the podium! And maybe we could have a president who knows the limits to his power and doesn’t tweet insults about anyone who doesn’t,t agree with him.We need to have respect again as a country, because right now we’re the laughing stock all over the world.

  9. There’s nothing that sounds like a public service announcement in what you wrote.

  10. I meant it was rude, insulting and full of hatred.
Obviously I know what “public” means.

  11. Go Christy! Nothing against Mike. If we were voting for coolest a fighter pilot is hard to beat! Christy has the better Vision and Superior experience enough said!
