California voters will soon have the chance to decide whether restrictions on buying and selling ammunition and firearms should be placed on firearm dealers and individuals.

Proposition 63 is a measure that would require background checks and permits to purchase ammunition, bans possession of large-capacity ammunition magazines and prohibits certain individuals from carrying firearms.

The measure would also remove a prior loophole and make stealing any and all firearm a felony and place regulations on the sale of ammunition.

In support of Proposition 63

By placing more regulations and restrictions on ammunition and firearm handling, those for Prop. 63 argue that public safety will soon improve by keeping ammunition and firearms “out of the wrong hands,” according to the Official Voter Information Guide.

Public officials and law enforcement also support the measure as it will help in reducing gun violence while also preventing violent felons, domestic abusers and mentally ill individuals from obtaining guns or ammunition.

In opposition of Proposition 63

Those opposed to the measure include many civil liberties groups, anti-terrorism experts and some law enforcement officials, who argue that these new regulations will not make a difference in terms of public safety.

They also claim that the extra costs and taxes that would go on to support these restrictions would only impacts the law-abiding citizen.
