Proposition 17 Would Restore Voting Rights To Parolees In California

Proposition 17 would grant parolees with felony convictions the right to vote in California.

Prop 17 is an amendment to the California Constitution, allowing people on parole for felony convictions to vote in the state, according to the state.

Under the current law of the California Constitution, people with felonies are unable to vote until their imprisonment and parole ends. Prop 17 would amend this to allow those with felonies who are on parole to vote.

Prop 17 would, however, keep imprisonment as a disqualification for voting but remove parole status.

Arguments in favor of the proposition cite that parole is not the punishment, but a chance for re-entering society, according to State Assemblymember Kevin McCarty.

“Parolees are many times working, paying taxes, raising their family, doing right. And they can’t vote on policies that affect their lives,” McCarthy said.

One argument against the proposition chooses to focus on the crime committed instead of the person who was released on parole.

“Let’s talk a little about the universe we are dealing with here,” said State Senator Jim Nielsen. “They include murderers, voluntary manslaughter, rape, sodomists. For those that commit the crimes, particularly the heinous crimes, part of their sentence is to complete the parole period.”

The California Secretary of State summarizes the proposition as it “amends the state constitution to restore voting rights to persons who have been disqualified from voting while serving a prison term as soon as they complete their prison term.”

A yes vote on Proposition 17 would restore voting rights to people with felony convictions while on parole.

Proposition 17 Would Restore Voting Rights To Parolees In California

  1. Parolees already have the right to vote once they have proven they can assimilate back into society. This prop intends to remove any conditions of personal responsibility and just grant voting rights so they can vote for cool uncle Gavin who let them out of jail unconditionally. What a scam for anti-prison Dems. Do not fall for this.

    • You started off so well with your first line but I seem to have missed the part you mentioned about “cool uncle Gavin” from your second in the text of this proposition. Most right-thinking people oppose privatized for-profit prisons. How about you?

      • He is right and a majority of people believe they should lose threat right to Vote after commuting a Felony. If Voting was that important to them they wouldn’t have committed crimes.

  2. What else do you do when the Democrats socialist party are desperate for votes? You get the teenagers and the felons. That’s their peeps!

  3. This is simply another scam by Democrats who protect Criminals instead of Law abiding citizens. If criminals Really cared about Voting they wouldn’t be committing the crimes in the first place.

  4. You would think that democrats wouldn’t worry since they have dead people, illegal aliens, children, others that have moved out of state and pets voting for them.

I guess adding felons makes them feel better about themselves somehow.

They have their special voting drop boxes where they can do what they wish ( toss out votes they don’t agree with) but when new drop boxes are added that they have no control over they have the chivers and demand they are removed.

The left is so corrupt in this state (and elsewhere) I have no idea on how this keeps going on and on.
