Santa Clarita election results are continuing to be updated Wednesday afternoon, as additional in-person ballots are counted.
Several races across the Santa Clarita Valley are very close, with the election for the 25th Congressional District within one percent of each candidate. Other races for the state senate and school boards are also in contention.

25th Congressional District
Assemblywoman Christy Smith, D-Santa Clarita, holds a narrow lead over incumbent Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, for California’s 25th Congressional seat (CA-25), in a race deemed a “close contest” by the state of California.
As of 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Smith held a narrow 50.32 percent of the vote and Garcia held 49.68 percent, with less than 2,000 votes separating the two candidates.

Senate District 21
The race between State Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, and Democratic challenger Kipp Mueller for California’s 21 State Senate District (SD-21) is the closest local race in the 2020 election as of Wednesday morning, with less than 600 votes separating the two.
As of 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Wilk held an extremely slim lead over Mueller, with 50.2 percent and 49.75 percent of the vote going to each candidate respectively.

38th Assembly District
Republican Suzette Martinez Valladares has maintained a strong lead over fellow Republican Lucie Volotzky in the race for California’s 38th Assembly District (AD-38), with nearly 76 percent of the total vote as of Wednesday morning.
As of 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Valladares has received 121,338 votes, as opposed to Volotzky’s 38,163 votes. This places the two Republican women at 76.07 percent and 23.93 percent of the vote respectively.

Santa Clarita City Council
Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth set a new record for the number of votes received by a Santa Clarita City Council candidate, earning just over 31 percent of the total vote in the 2020 election as of Wednesday morning
As of 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Smyth has received 47,163 votes, which accounts for 31.17 percent of the total votes counted so far.
This number is a new record within Santa Clarita politics, marking the most votes that a Santa Clarita City Council candidate has received in an election. The previous record came in 2016, when Councilmember Bob Kellar earned 32,216 votes.
Jason Gibbs had earned the second-most votes as of 4:30 p.m., with the 24,605 votes cast for him accounting for 16.26 percent of the total vote.

Santa Clarita Community College District
The Santa Clarita Community College District, which governs College of the Canyons, had three open seats for the 2020 election.
In trustee area No. 2, Dr. Edel Alonso, current board member and former faculty member, faced off against community leader Tony Watson. As of early Wednesday morning, Alonso is holding the largest margin for the COC board.

In trustee area No. 3, Sebastian Cazares, former associated student government (ASG) president and youth activist, is going against business leader Fred Arnold. Cazares is holding a three-point lead over Arnold, as of Wednesday evening, with in-person ballots still being counted.

The last seat up for grabs, trustee area No. 4, is currently held by Michele Jenkins who has served on the COC board for over 30 years. Jerry Danielsen, COC and California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) alum, is challenging Jenkins. There are about 300 votes in between the candidates as of Wednesday evening, the closest in the district.

William S. Hart Union School District Governing Board
The William S. Hart Union School District Governing Board oversees all high schools and junior highs in the Santa Clarita Valley, serving nearly 22,000 students. The board has two seats up for grabs in the 2020 election.
In trustee area No. 1, current board member and former teacher Linda Storli is being challenged by two opponents: teacher and mother Alyssa Williams, and Gordon Kirkpatrick, father of two students.
Storli is in the lead as of Wednesday evening, with about 10 points above the next candidate, Williams.

Saugus Union School District Governing Board
The Saugus Union School District Governing Board is the only elementary school district holding an election in November, due to the primary school board candidates not having opponents.
In trustee area No. 3, Katherine Cooper, longtime Santa Clarita resident and certified public accountant (CPA), is facing off against Christian Gadbois, Saugus parent and helicopter pilot. Cooper is leading the race with nearly 52 percent of the vote as of Wednesday evening.
