Voter Turnout In L.A. County In 2020 Nearly Half Of 2016 Primary Election

The voter turnout in Los Angeles County was nearly half the 2016 primary election, the last presidential election year, officials said.

Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan announced Wednesday that 20.62 percent of eligible voters showed up at election day Tuesday, which was lower than the last two elections.

This year, voters faced long lines on election day due to several changes in the voting system.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn called for hours-long wait times reported on Election Night at L.A. County Vote Centers to be investigated and for solutions to be implemented ahead of the November general election.

A total of 1,137,023 ballots were processed and counted, with 20.62 percent of eligible registered voters casting ballots, according to the Registrar’s office.

These numbers were down by half compared to 2016.

In 2016, 41.3 percent of eligible voters cast ballots and in 2018, 28.9 percent casted votes.

Of those who voted in the 2020 primary elections, 651,392 voted in person and 485,631 voters sent their ballots by mail.

After Election Day there are still many outstanding ballots to be counted. During the Official Election Canvas, all Conditional Voter Registration ballots, Provisional ballots and Vote by Mail ballots received on Election Day are processed.

Once the ballots are verified they are set to be counted.
