Garcia Introduces Prioritizing Troops Over Tax Collectors Act

Wednesday, Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, introduced a new bill, the Prioritizing Troops Over Tax Collectors Act, to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill would reallocate the $80 billion appropriated to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the Inflation Reduction Act to instead go towards a military servicemember pay raise. The bill would guarantee that every servicemember makes at least $15 an hour, or $31,200 annually, according to Garcia.

“Twenty-three thousand servicemembers rely on food stamps. That is 23,000 too many. Providing our military personnel with an adequate base pay raise should be commonsense,” Garcia said. “My bill will do just that by ensuring that each of our heroes in uniform is paid a minimum of $31,200 annually.

In September, Garcia’s “Emergency Relief for Servicemembers Act” passed through the House as a part of H.R. 7939, the “Student Veteran Emergency Relief Act of 2022.”

This legislation was passed alongside Garcia’s “Military Spouse Licensing Relief Act” which gives military spouses with a valid professional license in one state reciprocity in another state where their spouse is stationed on military orders.

“These servicemembers put their lives on the line for our country, they should be paid adequately for their service. Our servicemembers are our nation’s secret weapon and it’s time we treat them as such,” Garcia said. “As we see record-low military retention rates and growing recruiting shortfalls, this is an urgent issue that impacts not just the well-being of our brave heroes, but also our national security.”

  1. This is excellent Mr. Garcia! Thank you

  2. Where to start… Ok, (take a breath… another).
First, the money was allocated for another program.
Secondly, $15 ph is the CA minimum wage (w/o risking one’s life).
Thirdly, stop calling these military recruits heroes when they are seeking employment and education.
Far too often when we hear the word heroes it is preceded by another word, dead; usually by their own hand.
It’s easy to see w/o looking too far why military retention rates are falling.
Sure… the IRS is easy to vilify but w/o the money they bring in who is going to
pay for this and why in the world’s wealthiest country must it be either / or?

  3. Denny, are you suggesting the 87,000 new IRS agents will only go after those making over $400,000.00 as Biden is promising? While the tragedy of veteran suicide is way too high, it is miniscule when compared to active military deaths when we are in a conflict. Should a soldier who puts his life on the line to protect our freedom make less money than a kid flipping hamburgers?

  4. Why not put those 87,000 IRS agent monies towards Border Control agents instead?! Don’t we already have a Crisis of Illegal Aliens, drug/gun/terrorist/human smuggling/etc.?! Once again, Xiden’s mismanagement of the USA!

  5. Monkey See,
    Monkey Do,
    Monkey DooDoo
    Monkey throws
    DooDoo @ YOU!
