Gascón Recall Surpasses 450,000 Signatures Collected, Time Running Out To Qualify For Ballot

The Recall District Attorney George Gascón campaign announced Wednesday it has collected over 450,000 signatures as of May 13th, with thousands more being turned in daily and millions of petitions being mailed out directly to voters this week.

To get the recall on the ballot, the campaign must collect 566,857 signatures from registered Los Angeles County voters.

The deadline for submission to the Registrar is July 6, 2022.

“With 50 days to go, we are continuing to see increases in signature collection and anticipate additional bumps as our mail program is fully deployed.  We are on the cusp of qualifying this recall and positioned exactly where we need to be to hit our goals within the remaining timeframe.  If residents and community leaders continue to step up, this will be the beginning of the end of George Gascón‘s reign of terror over Los Angeles,” officials with the Recall DA Gascón Campaign said.

Recall Effort Continues To Build Bi-partisan Support

Following the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce announcing its support for the recall effort, the Santa Clarita City Council made Santa Clarita the first city to take a vote of no confidence for Gascón, joined now by over 31 cities in L.A. County which have also issued votes of no confidence.

“The policies and directives that District Attorney Gascon has implemented since being elected has hurt the families of victims, demoralized law enforcement, and has endangered the lives of our residents,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Pro Tem Jason Gibbs. “The city took the unprecedented positions of both voting no confidence in the DA, and supporting his recall from office, and I would encourage everyone to sign the petition and help restore justice and safety in our communities.”

The announcement follows a growing recall effort against Gascón, to whom blame has been cast for crime trends in L.A. County for the past few years.

In 2020, the number of incarcerations in California dropped by 66 percent, and the state saw a subsequent increase in murder rates by 31 percent. Many have placed the blame on the D.A. for these trends.

Nine special directives made by Gascón when he took office have been pointed to as causes for the D.A.’s proposed recall, including:

  • Special Directive 20-06, which essentially eliminates cash bail within L.A. County for “any misdemeanor, non-serious felony, or non-violent felony offense.”
  • Special Directive 20-07, which directs prosecutors to decline or dismiss a series of misdemeanor charges, including trespassing, drug possession, and resisting arrest
  • Special Directive 20-08, which originally eliminated sentencing enhancements for most charges. It has since been amended to allow for such enhancements for serious charges such as child abuse, sex trafficking, and hate crimes

In addition to cities and residents not supporting the DA, 98 percent of Gascon’s own prosecutors support the recall, along with Los Angeles police and sheriffs

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
