Katie Hill Responds To President Trump’s ‘Common Sense Compromise’

Representative Katie Hill, D-Agua Dulce, issued a statement minutes before President Trump announced what he called a “common sense compromise” to reopen the government, stating that it was not acceptable to “negotiate policy on the backs of American workers and families.”

President Trump addressed the nation in a televised speech shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday to announce a proposal that would reopen the federal government.

“If we are successful, we will have the best chance at real bipartisan effort reform,” Trump said. “This is a common sense compromise both parties should embrace.”

The proposal would provide $5.7 billion for steel barriers on the U.S.-Mexico border, which would add 230 miles of physical barriers on the border by the end of the year, according to Trump.

“This is not a 2,000 mile concrete structure from sea to sea,” Trump said. “These are steel barriers in high-priority locations.”

The proposal also includes a three-year period of legislative relief for 700,000 DACA recipients, giving them access to work permits and social security numbers while also protecting them from deportation

In addition, the proposal also extend Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for three years for 300,000 immigrants whose protected status is facing expiration, according to Trump.

“That is our plan,” Trump said. “Straightforward, fair, reasonable, and common sense, with lots of compromise.”

Hill issued a statement regarding her stance on Trump’s announcement shortly before it was made, denouncing it due to the fact that the federal government remains shut down while such a deal is considered and negotiated.

“The President is attempting to force our hand and make us do exactly what we said we wouldn’t negotiate the policy on the backs of American workers and families,” Hill said.

Hill has repeated, amidst controversy about comments she made about funding border barriers, that she wants to reopen the government before negotiating over the border barrier and immigration.

“Democrats stand united and ready to come to the table and discuss long-term solutions to address border security and immigration reform, but only when the government is open and people are getting paid,” Hill said.

Hill added that negotiating under the current terms would set a precedent that, “every political disagreement has the opportunity to dismantle and destruct the lives of our federal workers, and undermine the very fabric of our democracy.”

Hill later posted on social media after the announcement was made, further reinforcing her position.

This is exactly what we thought — more political games,” Hill said. “And we’re not playing.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to take the President’s proposal to the Senate floor this week, as the longest government shutdown in U.S. history draws closer to hitting the one-month mark.

Katie Hill Responds To President Trump’s ‘Common Sense Compromise’

  1. Well, he tried. Dems will destroy America, this year.

  2. As a representative of the people, rejecting a proposal before it has been offered is like going into court and pleading guilty before you have been charged.. I am disappointed because I want a wall. I personally think the president offered too much. I don’t see a counter offer coming back or even consideration. I was hoping Katie Hill would be a leader and when she mentioned the need for a barrier there was hope she quickly extinguished.

  3. The reason that federal employees can’t take care of their families right now is because of people like you & dear Nancy! Don’t blame this mess on Trump, it is all of you Democrat’s that caused the mess! You all will do anything you possibly can to try to make Trump look bad!None of you care one bit about our country’s future, you are all so bitter about him being president that you will do whatever it takes to try to ruin his presidency’s!Build the wall!

  4. Why is Katie making comments on something she has not heard ? Political? We listened to President Trump and found it to be something that would work. But I see Katie is just not what she ran on but just a follower. So just we will be voting her out of office. Lies from being. So sorry to see

  5. I’m very disappointed that you have chose to sacrifice Americans for your political gain. Some of your constituents were counting on your compassion and detetcation to “do the right thing” and reopen the government. However it looks like you just another political hack. Shame on you

  6. The amount of money that the President wants for his barrier is 0.5% of the federal budget. That basically amounts to a rounding error.

Give the president what he is asking for! Stop and think for yourself Katie! Don’t let Pelosi dictate to you what you should support. I daresay most of your constituents support better border security including a wall, fence or steel slats.

  7. “Common Sense?!” trump wouldn’t know common sense if it bit him in the butt! Each time he negotiates, he changes what he said previously just like a crooked businessman. Why would anyone negotiate with him, because there is no plan. This is yet another divisive move to divert attention away from what’s going on in the white house, and all he has done. Let the chips fall where they may, but the 880,000 workers don’t deserve this. Good Ol’ Boy, Mitch could have solved the problem last week, but he didn’t. He does come up for reelection this year. trump can’t shut down the government each time he wants his way. He is such a spoiled baby and could care less about most of the people in this country!

  8. If all the illegal aliens that are convicted of being in OUR Country were made to work on the wall as part of their sentence for breaking OUR laws that would be almost like Mexico at least helping to pay for the wall.
Katie, What is your solution to the border problem? Is it a rubber stamp to rich and powerful Nancy Pelosi. Her estimated net worth is reported to be about $100,000,000. I noticed how she was all about security for herself when it came to Trump giving the State of the Union address in the House Chamber but she doesn’t give a rat’s ass about security at the border for the rest of the Nation. It looks like Katie Hill cares about the rat’s ass the same as Nancy.

  9. I can’t believe people didn’t see this coming. This woman was bought by the rich man in New York, a millionaire Democrat. He put her on every single website 24/7. I also believe there was voter fraud. I knew what she would stand for but can’t do anything now. You get what you vote for. These Democrats have to do and say whatever Pelosi and Schumer tell them. Two lunatics running the party

    • Rose,
I also believe there is voter fraud in Our State. It is just too difficult for me to understand how there can be such an overwhelming number of uninformed voters.

      • It’s not difficult, Mark-
We don’t listen to Hannity and Limbaugh or watch the FOX right-wing propaganda network. We’d much rather know the facts than to be “informed” by any of them.

    • Agree. She is Nancy puppet. Her statement was the same as the otber young Dems that were elected. Do yourself a favor Katie Hill DO YOUR RESEARCH about Pelosi before you regret your decision to blindly follow her lead. She is corrupt since her daddy was a crime boss running drugs. Wake up – SCV. Voters made a mistake.

  10. How do you people live with so much hate in your lives everyday? It’s amazing to read these comments and just because someone has a (R) or (D), you immediately hate them. Doesn’t matter what they believe in or stand for. Katie is new. She’s learning. How about giving her a chance? Everyone has to start out somewhere.

These “Illegal Aliens” you talk about are human beings. Just like you. They just weren’t lucky enough to be born in the United States and were born in horrible countries that don’t respect human life. They are only looking for a better life. I’m sure your “Christian” values are only good for people born in the United States?

How about we hold ALL politicians to a high standard, whether they have an (R) or (D) next to their name? Start with the President. It’s funny how just because he ran as a (R) that he gets a pass for all the lying and deceitful comments he makes on a daily basis. Facts are facts. There are no Alternative Facts. There are only Facts.

Let’s all try to listen to each other. We all live and want this country to be the best it can be, but if we lose our moral compass, then it’s not a country worth living in.

    • Hallelujah, Alex. Democracy is not a team sport.
      It requires knowledgeable participation.

    • She needs to do her homework before she blindly follows Pelosi. This is her chance. If she doesn’t know who she’s listening to how can she make good decisions for her district. We don’t back open borders, we do however have human compassion. There needs to be compromise. Issing statements before reading a proposal – shame on her
