Los Angeles County “enthusiastically supports” the Supreme Court ruling to uphold the protections afforded to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, officials said.
The County, which filed a friend of the court brief in the case, argued that DACA offers a valuable path forward for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children by allowing them the chance to contribute to this country without fear of deportation.
“We are gratified that the Court agrees with our position, offering a positive resolution for all DACA recipients who were facing continued uncertainty,” said County officials in a statement.
Based on this decision, the County encouraged all DACA recipients in the County who currently have, or have previously had DACA status, to continue to submit their renewal applications. By renewing their DACA status, Dreamers can continue to make vital contributions to their families, local communities and the county, according to officials.
“I join my colleagues in celebrating the Supreme Court ruling to protecting Dreamers as a significant victory for the thousands of children who came to this Country at a young age and are now integral members of our community,” said Kathryn Barger, Chair of the L.A County Board of Supervisors. “The County will continue to review and identify the necessary programs and services to support this population, working together with our partners and stakeholders. This is yet another reminder of the crucial need for the Federal Government to develop and implement comprehensive immigration reform.”
The County remains committed to advancing the well-being of all immigrants by providing residents with access to support services, according to Barger.
“The Department of Consumer and Business Affairs embodies this commitment in each of our core programs,” said Joseph M. Nicchitta, Director of the Department of Consumer and Business Affairs. “Each day we learn more about the unique struggles our immigrant neighbors face, whether they are consumers, business owners, tenants or homeowners. We strive to advance equity by adjusting our services to meet the needs of the immigrants who contribute so much to our culture and the economy of the region. We are led in this effort by the County’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA),which is a fundamental part of the Department of Consumer and Business Affairs.”
OIA provides support services and information for immigrants, and leads high-profile efforts to advance County policies that support immigrant stakeholders, including the County’s Immigrant Protection and Advancement Task Force, a multi-sector effort to improve how government engages and serves immigrants.
“We applaud today’s important victory for the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers, including nearly 80,000 Angelenos who as our friends, colleagues, and members of our families play a defining role in our rich civic, cultural, educational and economic life,” said L.A. County Office of Immigrant Affairs Executive Director Rigoberto Reyes.
In the coming days, OIA will be providing updates about the impact of the decision, including DACA renewal services and information regarding new application filings.

It’s a shame their criminal parent(s) brought them here! Let them stay as long as they’re in school or working, but commit 1 crime and deport them! They must assimilate into decent American citizens—their choice!
They are American you idiot. They know no other life but the life they have here so assimilation is not the issue. The issue in America is that there are too many narrow minded people like yourself.
Kent: They’re not Americans, they’re DACA, brought here by criminal parent(s)! If they’re in school &/or working, let them stay, but if they commit one crime, deport them—it’s their choice if they want to be a decent American!
JoJo you have great suggestions! Deportation if committing crime(s). ??
They have been here for too long without even applying for Citizenship. It’s time for them to either apply and go through the Citizenship process or leave. They weren’t born here, but by no fault of their own were brought here. It is time to rectify the situation by applying for citizenship.
They shouldn’t have to apply for anything. They are as American as you. Probably more so come to think of it.
Kent(not Clark): You’re insane and maybe a traitor
The Supreme Court really just gave presidential power to make executive orders that cannot be recinded except by a cumbersome system that will take years to complete. Obama by his own admission said that the DACA order was illegal and Trump tried to remove it by the same type of order.
What this in effect does is open the door for executive orders to be the new way of legislation; even newer than doing it from the judicial bench.
Time will tell if Trump takes advantage of it, but you can count on Biden doing it if he is elected.
Exactly! And the folks that agree with DACA fail to understand they will not be allowed to vote. I don’t understand this mentality that I have to support these people. My own native American children can’t even get any of these services. The hypocrisy is maddening. Everyone deserves chances to succeed but at whose expense? Do this the legal way, these kids are now adults and have many years to get this done. My family has helped many to get their citizenship, this is laziness and politics not to mention illegal.
I wonder how many of the Seattle Anarchists are DACA?
Tell us, if you’re putting it out there.
Naive Anne: “I wonder” means we don’t know, asking a question for anyone with answers—
I was hoping you’d actually look into it for us, and come up with some answers of your own.No big deal.
