Mike Garcia Leads In Second Quarter Fundraising Numbers For CA-25

About $4 million has been raised by both candidates for the 25th Congressional District during the second quarter of 2020, with Mike Garcia leading in the totals by about $1 million, officials said.

From April 1 through June 30, now-Congressman Mike Garcia raised about $2.5 million, outpacing Assemblywoman Christy Smith with $1.5 million, according to both campaigns.

Garcia won the May 12 special election for CA-25 with about 54.9 percent of the vote, and both candidates are set to face-off once again in November for the full 2021-2023 term.

“The voters of CA-25 spoke loud and clear earlier this year when they elected Mike Garcia to Congress by a 10-point margin,” Garcia Spokesperson Lance Trover said. “Mike’s victory and fundraising support came from more than 46,000 individuals who donated since the day he announced his run for office.”

Following the special election until the end of the quarter, Garcia raised nearly $550,00 with Smith raising more than $314,000, according to representatives from both campaigns.

Further breakdown of contributions reveals widespread grassroots support — from educators to health care workers and first responders — totaling 24,651 donors and averaging $34.59 per online donation, according to a spokesperson for Smith.

“I am extremely grateful for the widespread support for our campaign, as we fight to send representation to Congress that reflects our community’s values,” Smith said in a statement. “In this time of financial distress, I am deeply humbled by hard-working people chipping in to support our grassroots, people-powered movement. Together, we’ll fight for access to affordable health care, greater investments in public education, critical infrastructure improvements, and protections for working families.”

Both Smith and Garcia are set to go head-to-head one more time for the next full Congressional term on Nov. 3.
