A pair of candidates for the 25th Congressional District seat held by Congressman Buck McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, and a state assemblyman are calling on McKeon to stop an aggregate mine in Canyon Country by reviving a tact he tried in 2001. A letter sent by state Sen. Steve Knight, R-Antelope Valley, and Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, urged McKeon “to submit an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill that would declare State Highway 14 a ‘national defense asset’ that would ban the CEMEX mega-mine from moving forward,” the letter stated. In 2001, amendment language on the Highway 14 move was accepted, however it was pulled from the bill during conference committee, Wilk said.

A Santa Clarita tax adviser is throwing his hat in the ring for the 25th Congressional District, seeking the seat held by Congressman Buck McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, for more than 20 years. Troy Castagna, 37, of Saugus, who runs his business TC Financial, out of a Santa Clarita Valley office. Castagna acknowledged he was a relatively late-comer to the race, but also said he was spurred to run after finding out about who the presumptive front-runners were for the Republican Party.

Santa Clarita City Council candidates Alan Ferdman and Dante Acosta might be able to relate to the famous Yogi Berra saying “deja vu all over again” more than most. After tens of thousands of dollars in expenditures, months of campaigning and a very long election night, they’re still in the same spot they were in Tuesday. “It’s like waiting for the election date again,” Ferdman said, in an interview at the KHTS AM-1220 newsroom Friday. “I have to stay positive, and this time I have a little bit of a hurdle to get over.”

The polls are long closed in Santa Clarita’s City Council election, and city officials plan to tally the remaining results Tuesday, after proper verifications are made. Unofficial election results show a turnout of 14,870 voters, who cast 38,837 votes -- however, the results of the last 965 ballots are likely to decide the election. Santa Clarita officials had all of the verified votes counted as of about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night, will all precincts reported. These preliminary, unofficial results show Mayor Laurene Weste garnered 5,822 votes and Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean had 5,363 votes. And then the margins narrow significantly.
