This year, City Council members awarded two grants in the sum of $90,000 each for community service and art program providers during their first meeting of the year on Jan. 8.

Each year, local nonprofit organizations receive grants from the City to assist with community-based services, art activities, and events for Santa Clarita residents.

This year, the City received 59 grant applications. A total of 36 local nonprofit organizations are set to receive funding.

Agencies applied for support within four categories: Community Services, Community Arts, Santa Clarita Presents and Arts Organization Capacity, according to City staff.

Projects that are eligible for funding included one-time projects or programs, program enhancements, pilot programs, capital expenditures, special supplies, and program implementation.

Matthew Nelson, CEO of the Santa Clarita Boys and Girls Club, discussed clubhouse updates that will be possible with the City’s award.

“We’re going to be doing kitchen updates at both clubhouses in Canyon Country and Newhall,” said Nelson. “We use the kitchens to prep snacks, do cooking classes and various activities. We’re excited about this opportunity. It will help us in our mission to teach the children healthy lifestyles and make sure they have healthy eating options.”

Michael Foley, Executive Director for Bridge To Home shared his gratitude and plans for the newly granted funds.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the city for putting aside this funding for the nonprofit community,” said Foley. “We’re receiving 5 thousand dollars that is designated to purchase a vehicle that will be used to transport homeless people to their important meetings that help them go from homelessness to housing.”

Nonprofits are sometimes able to use funding provided through grants as a starting point to raise more funds by holding events that ask the community to match what has been awarded, according to officials.
