UPDATE: Santa Clarita City Council Candidates Raise Over $60K In Final Reporting Period

The nine candidates running for two seats on the Santa Clarita City Council have raised over $60,000 in the past month for the final reporting period of the 2020 race.

Between Sept. 20 and Oct. 17, the candidates running for the Santa Clarita City Council reportedly raised $60,995.66, according to campaign filings published by the City Clerk’s office.

First-time candidate Selina Thomas led in terms of money raised during the month, reporting $20,074.66 in contributions. Santa Clarita Mayor Camerom Smyth and Jason Gibbs rounded out the top three, raising $12,200 and $8,350 in the past month respectively.

Thomas had previously filed a Form 470, which declares that a candidate “anticipates that (they) will receive less than $2,000, and that (they) will spend less than $2,000” during the calendar year that they have filed, according to the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC).

However, she submitted a written notice that she had gone over the pledged $2,000 limit on Sept. 26, meaning that she was required to report both her contributions and expenditures.

She then reported raising $21,424.66 since the beginning of 2020, with her first contributions listed as having come in on Aug. 20. A total of $1,350 of her reported funds raised occurred before the final reporting period of Sept. 20 to Oct. 17, meaning $20,074.66 was raised during the actual final period.

Gibbs leads in reported cash on hand, having reported $9,453.22-worth of cash on hand.

However, Smyth led in terms of total funds raised in 2020 with $50,262, after reporting $6,000-worth of contributions after the final filing period recorded in a pair of 24-hour Contribution Reports. Gibbs, Kelvin Driscoll and Chris Werthe similarly logged an additional $1,000 each after the final reporting period.

Douglas Fraser and Kenneth Dean had previously filed Form 470’s, meaning that they are not required to report their contributions or expenditures under California law. The only exception to this would be if a candidate either received or spent more than $2,000 towards their campaign, as was the case with Thomas.

Each candidate’s fundraising totals are listed below:

The two seats up for grabs in the 2020 election include Smyth’s seat, and Councilmember Bob Kellar’s seat. Kellar had previously announced that he would not run for re-election, and did not file paperwork to run in November.

Early voting centers opened in Los Angeles County on Saturday, with more scheduled to open on Oct. 30. All in-person voting centers are set to remain open until Nov. 3.

  1. Inteesting that Gibbs and Smyth are raising so much money, but where is it coming from? Big corporations? Big developers or regular people> That is the really important question for the voters and this article doesn’t discuss it at all. Too bad.
