Dr. Edel Alonso Announces Bid For Second Term For Santa Clarita Community College District

Dr. Edel Alonso announced her re-election bid to the Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees, Voting Area 2, in the Nov. 3 general election.

She is running for a second term, having won the seat for her first term in 2016.

“I endorse Dr. Edel Alonso for board member of the Santa Clarita Community College District (SCCCD),” said Basil Arana, who as elected by the students as their 2019-2020 representative on the SCCCD Board. “Throughout my tenure as student trustee, Dr. Alonso has consistently been the trustee to ask the hard questions and demand the right answers. To work side-by-side with Dr. Alonso is to witness her conviction, skill, and tenacity. As a student, I am so grateful there was someone like Dr. Alonso advocating for us and our education. As an alumnus, I could not imagine the board without Dr. Alonso.”

Alonso remains committed to her goals: putting student needs first, campus safety, fiscal accountability, and transparency to the public; she continues to champion access and equity for all students. Alonso has earned the endorsement of all three employee associations at the college representing the full-time faculty, the part-time faculty, and the classified employees.

“Not only do I bring an educator’s perspective to the board, having taught and counseled at the high school, community college, and university levels, but an insider’s view,” Alonso said.

While at College of the Canyons (COC), she served on numerous committees including the Budget Advisory Committee, which she co-chaired, and she was elected by the faculty to serve as Academic Senate President for two terms. By the time she was elected to the Board of Trustees, she had been regularly attending board meetings for almost 5 years.

Alonso and her late husband Charlie Armstrong moved to Santa Clarita in 1987. A life-long educator who earned her doctoral degree in educational and organizational leadership, she retired from College of the Canyons (COC) after 16 years serving as a full-time counselor and teaching faculty.
