Santa Clarita Brothers Announce Candidacy For Local School Board Elections

A pair of Santa Clarita brothers, Matthew and Tony Watson, have announced their candidacies for a pair of local school board seats on the ballot this November.

Matthew Watson is running for the Area 4 seat of the Saugus Union School District Governing Board while his brother Tony Watson seeks the College of the Canyons Board of Trustees, Area 2 seat.

The Watson family moved to Saugus in 1980 due to the strong academic reputation of Santa Clarita’s schools. Matt started at Santa Clarita Elementary and Tony at Arroyo Seco Junior High, both went on to graduate from Saugus High School.

“The Saugus Union Schools have always been among the best in California. But the educational landscape is changing,” said Matthew Watson. “I want to make sure our schools continue to lead the way.”

Matthew Watson is a career educator with 25 years of experience as a teacher and has also worked as an assistant principal, principal, as well as a curriculum and professional development expert.  He also serves on the board of the Santa Clarita Valley International Program.

The top issues highlighted by his campaign for the Saugus Union School District seat are school safety, teacher training and resources to prepare schools for the future and strengthening social-emotional learning programs.

Tony Watson continued his college education locally as well, as he attended College of the Canyons and The Master’s University where he received a degree in organizational management. He went on to work in management for facilities companies Andy Gump and United Site Services.

Locally, Tony Watson has served on a number of other local boards including, the Boys and Girls Club, Willam S. Hart Pony Baseball, Centro de Amor Christian Church and the SCV Chamber of Commerce.

The focus points of his platform include low-cost, affordable college opportunities, support for diversity in faculty, administration and staff, and touts his experience as an effective, practical administrator.

“The Nov. 3 election is a big one for our country, our state, and locally,” says Tony, “We’re counting on a strong voter turn-out to help both of our candidacies.”
