Santa Clarita ‘Porch Pirates’ Could Face Up To Three Years In Jail With Proposed Bill

Santa Clarita “porch pirates” could face up to three years in county jail if Assembly Bill 1210 passes, officials said.

Currently, the law states that anyone who enters a house, room, apartment or any structure with the intent to commit larceny or any felony is guilty of burglary in the first or second degree.

Assembly Bill 1210, which was introduced earlier this week by Assemblyman Evan Low, D-Campbell, would prohibit a person from entering an area adjacent to or in the immediate area of a home as defined, with the intent to commit theft of a package shipped through the mail or delivered by a public or private carrier.

The bill would make a violation of that prohibition punishable as a misdemeanor by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or as a felony by imprisonment in a county jail for 16 months to three years.

Package theft is seen throughout Santa Clarita year-round, according to Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“It’s something that happens year-round, not just around the holidays,” Miller said. “We see an increase around the holidays because crooks know a lot of packages are being delivered.”

However, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials believe that doorbell cameras are causing thieves to think twice before stealing a package from someone’s door.

“It gives detectives something to work with if someone has a package stolen because the Ring doorbell gives clarity of the suspect,” Miller said.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
