The second phase of the housing project, just north of the Santa Clarita city limits in Valencia, is expected to include about 820 homes, but none are set aside for affordable housing, according to county documents.

The regional planning body approved the project 3-2, with Commissioners Doug Smith and David W. Louie voting against the project.

The Tesoro Project developer is voluntarily pledging to deposit $1.6 million into a LA County fund for projects to serve homeless families and individuals, according to officials.

The next phase of the housing development is now set to move onto the Board of Supervisors for the final approval.

Supervisor Barger, who represents Santa Clarita as part of the fifth district, has been an opponent of the suggested shelter, stating Bridge to Home is already helping the community.

The housing development is located in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, north of Santa Clarita city limits, between West Creek and San Francisquito Canyon, according to City officials.

The project size is approximately 1,200 acres, which is expected to hold about 820 homes, including associated public facilities and dedicated open space.

Bridge to Home President Peggy Edwards requested that the Santa Clarita City Council oppose the incorporation of an onsite homeless shelter in the Tesoro Del Valle project.

“Ms. Edwards expressed Bridge to Home’s concerns that a homeless shelter within the proposed project would be detrimental to the future expansion of homeless services at Bridge to Home,” said the agenda.

The Planning Commission’s approval of the Tesoro Project is subject to appeal with the last file Nov. 19, according to county officials.

  1. Good! Any “afordable housing” should be built in more affordable areas. If you can’t afford to live somewhere it’s not the governments place to step in and lower the cost to live there. Do it like we all had to! Work up to where you want to live. It costs more for a reason!!!

    • Where do you want your wait staff and cashiers to live? The way I see it you either need affordable housing or way better transit (preferably both).

      • Tax payers shouldn’t pay for every social program. Affordable housing is another social program. Majority of Santa Claritans commute everyday to work. Why don’t we ask other cities to build affordable housing So we don’t have to commute.

  2. I understand not wanting a homeless shelter there .but why not some affordable studio apartments for the working youths ?
