11 Providence Hospitals Named Among Top Health Care Centers In Southern California

11 Providence Hospitals were named among the best health care centers in Southern California, officials announced Tuesday.

The mainstay of clinical excellence at Providence lies with its eight Clinical Institutes, officials said.

Each institute brings together top specialists who help coordinate research, evaluate the latest technology and treatment and, most importantly, share evidence-based best practices across all 11 Southern California Providence hospitals and clinics to ensure high-quality care and the best possible outcomes for every patient.

The clinical institutes offer advanced care in cancer, cardiovascular, digestive health, neurosciences, mental health, orthopedics and sports medicine, women’s and children’s services and research, according to officials.

This model of shared expertise is raising the bar on excellence in several specialties and procedures across the organization. This was made clear today as U.S. News & World Report announced its prestigious Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, bestowing more than 100 honors on nine Providence Southern California hospitals.

Dr. Rex Hoffman., chief medical officer of the Southern California Clinical Institutes, credits this model for continuous improvement in care. All or most of the hospitals received high ratings in the same categories in the annual U.S. News report.

For example, all nine were rated high performing for treatment of life-threatening conditions, including congestive heart failure, heart attack, colon cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney failure. Most were recognized for geriatrics and pulmonology and all but one, for exemplary treatment of stroke.

“We are seeing clear improvements in the coordination of care across several key specialties in our Southern Californian hospitals as a result of the Clinical Institutes,” said Dr. Hoffman, who also is chief medical officer for Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in the San Fernando Valley. “Collectively, the skill sets and expertise our physicians and clinicians are able to provide by working together across the continuum of care has led to our patients receiving better care.”

Under this model, clinical trials at one hospital are open to all. The same is true for specialized life-saving equipment such as the ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) treatment that has been credited with saving gravely ill COVID-19 patients transferred from several hospitals to Providence hospitals that offer this technology.

“Our clinical institutes are gaining momentum through collaboration and innovation across our organization with one goal: providing the best possible outcome for every single patient,” said Brian Helleland, chief clinical officer for programs and operations. “By partnering, our leading experts are creating consistent high-quality levels of care at every Providence facility, close to home.”

With approximately 415 acute care hospitals in California, the nine local Providence hospitals were rated among California’s 42 best and three were named as Best Regional Hospitals.

“Our physicians and caregivers across Providence continue to build upon our culture of quality, innovation and collaboration to reach new heights in caring each and every patient,” said Kevin Mane, chief executive Providence Southern California. “Our regional clinical institute model promotes evidence-based best practices, developed through research and shared expertise to help ensure the best possible outcomes for those who entrust us with their care.”
