The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office warns of a prescription drug scam exploiting seniors in a press release, Friday.
In the prescription drug scam, retailers advertise medications promising better results alongside better prices for their products, according to the press release. The “benefits” and “cures” talked about by the retailers are not scientifically supported.
If the counterfeit drugs are taken, they can pose serious health risks, or even be fatal.
“In some instances, the thieves take the money and never deliver a product,” said the press release. “More dangerously, they may deliver counterfeit ‘drugs’ that pose serious and, possibly, fatal health risks.”
To prevent falling victim to a prescription drug scam, the following actions have been shared by the L.A. County District Attorney:
- Speak with your doctor about all prescription plans.
- Avoid sites that offer free prescriptions for merely filling out a questionnaire.
- Exclusively order prescriptions online from pharmacies approved by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.
- If you have not received any products in exchange for money, inform local law enforcement.
This scam targets Los Angeles County senior residents. Warning signs of financial fraud of a senior include:
- Unusual activity is detected on their accounts like unexplained withdrawals or new names added.
- The senior starts to appear anxious or afraid.
- Bills suddenly go unpaid.
- The senior appears to have a shortage of necessities.
