The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) plans to dispatch a higher number of officials to look out for traffic violations from Nov. 30 through Dec. 15.

Officials are set to look for people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in particular. They also plan to search for people driving unsafely during the holidays.

“2020 has been a tough year so let’s try and end it on a good note by being safe on the road during the holidays,” Sgt. Robert Hill said. “Taking simple safety measures helps make sure we can all enjoy the holidays.”

The use of marijuana and certain prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications can lead to impaired driving, especially when used in combination with alcohol and other drugs.

Unsafe driving practices include speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, driving while distracted, and not yielding to pedestrians and bicyclists.

The patrolling program is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In 2019, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrested 867 people for driving under the influence during a maximum enforcement period over Thanksgiving weekend, during which a higher number of CHP officers were on duty.

Additionally, in 2018, the CHP had a Christmas Day maximum enforcement period which resulted in the arrests of 1,166 people for driving under the influence.

“There’s no joy in a DUI,” Hill said. “Sober is the way to go.”
