California Highway Patrol To Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint In Santa Clarita Valley

On Friday, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area Office is slated to conduct a sobriety checkpoint in the unincorporated areas of the Santa Clarita Valley, with the location to be announced just prior to the operation.

A sobriety checkpoint designed to prevent driving under the influence (DUI) is slated for Friday, organized by CHP Newhall Area Office.

“The goal of the DUI Checkpoint is to create awareness among the motoring public, to deter people from driving under the influence and to keep the streets safe for all,” CHP officials said. “Although checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road, the CHP will apprehend DUI. drivers who fail to heed our warnings.”

The sobriety checkpoint is slated to begin at approximately 8 p.m. and conclude at around 2 a.m. Saturday, according to CHP officials.

Motorists who approach the checkpoint are expected to see signs advising them of the checkpoint ahead, and once diverted into the lane, motorists are set to be detained momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of their actions, according to CHP officials.

“Sobriety checkpoints are conducted in accordance to the guidelines for checkpoint operations outlined in the Supreme Court decision, Ingersol vs. Palmer,” CHP officials state. “Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked.”

If traffic volume in the sobriety checkpoint’s vicinity becomes too heavy, CHP has stated that vehicles in line to be checked will be selected by a pre-set standard, such as every 5th or 10th vehicle, to assure objectivity.
