CHP To Conduct DUI Checkpoint This Weekend For St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

This upcoming weekend, Friday through Saturday, California Highway Patrol (CHP) is scheduled to be conducting a sobriety checkpoint to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the road due to St. Patrick’s Day.

The CHP Newhall Office is set to be running the DUI checkpoint somewhere in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, beginning at 7 P.M. Friday, March 18 and concluding Saturday, March 19 at 12:30 A.M. The exact location of the checkpoint is not available at this time, set to be announced closer to the time of the screening.

Motorists passing through the checkpoint can expect signs indicating the sobriety checkpoint ahead and to be diverted into a single lane. All vehicles can expect to be delayed for a short amount of time while an officer conducts a brief conversation on this St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

CHP states that the purpose of this event is to generate DUI awareness in the driving community, deter impaired driving, and to keep the streets safe for all people in the community. Recognizing that the sobriety checkpoint will reduce traffic in the area, if any impaired drivers are detected through the checkpoint, they will be apprehended by CHP officers.

The reduction of drunk and drug-impaired driving in the area is just as much a goal as total arrests, according to CHP Public Information Officer Josh Greengard.

The DUI checkpoint is founded and operated in accordance with the strict guidelines outlined in the Supreme Court decision Ingersol vs. Palmer.

Depending on the flow of traffic, all vehicles will be asked to stop at the DUI checkpoint, but in the event traffic is too heavy, vehicles will be selected by a pre-set standard to ensure objectivity.

  1. Hopefully this holiday weekend more people take the DUI checkpoint notice seriously. The new California DUI laws are harsh for people having to fightDUIcharges and especially if a person gets convicted of even a first offense DUI. It’s just not worth the safety risk either by drinking or smoking and drive intoxicated.

  2. If CHP is doing it, then it will be in County, not City. Usually, it is set-up on the Old Road near Walmart.
