CHP To Launch Maximum Enforcement Period Over Fourth Of July Weekend

The California Highway Patrol is expected to launch its Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) over the Fourth of July weekend, officials said.

Starting Friday evening at 6 p.m. and lasting until Sunday, July 5 at midnight, all available CHP officers are expected to be on patrol looking for impaired drivers, according to the department.

As California gradually reopens, many people will be eager to celebrate the holiday weekend with family and friends, according to the CHP.

“Should the upcoming weekend include a road trip, stay safe and healthy with a few additional precautions,” CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. “Obeying speed limits, buckling up and not driving impaired or distracted will be more important than ever.”

Traffic has been lighter on California roadways, including those in Santa Clarita the past few months, which has resulted in an increase in citations for excessive speed, according to CHP officials.

Motorists are encouraged to take their time this holiday weekend and arrive safely at their destination.

During the recent Memorial Day MEP, CHP officers issued 458 citations for speeding in excess of 100 mph, which is a 173 percent increase from the same period in 2019.

The 2019 Independence Day MEP was 4 and one-quarter days, which was two days longer than the upcoming MEP, according to officials.

During that 102-hour enforcement effort, 36 people lost their lives in traffic crashes, 21 within CHP jurisdiction. Of those 21 individuals, 11 were not wearing seat belts, CHP officials said.

Additionally, CHP officers made 1,317 arrests for driving under the influence.

“However you choose to celebrate the weekend, do it without putting yourself or others at risk,” Stanley added.

To help reduce the risk and slow the spread of COVID-19, the California Department of Public Health is urging the public to avoid traveling long distances for vacations or pleasure as much as possible.

However, for those who decide to leave home, take steps to keep everyone safe like wearing face coverings, physical distancing and washing hands frequently.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
