City Encourages Residents, Businesses To Be DUI Safe This Holiday Season

As the holiday season moves into full swing, the City of Santa Clarita reminds residents to celebrate responsibly and to encourage their local businesses to join the “Heads Up” pledge and support DUI prevention.

Tis the season to celebrate – but celebrate safely! Alcohol-impaired fatalities make up more than a quarter of all crash fatalities, which is why it is never a good idea to get behind the wheel after having a drink.

In fact, over the past five years, an average of 300 Americans died in drunk driving crashes the week between Christmas and New Year alone, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

In the City of Santa Clarita, collisions caused by drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or other drugs are up 13% from January through September 2019 compared to the same time frame in 2018.

To curb this dangerous trend, the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station are teaming up for the latest iteration of the Heads Up traffic safety campaign. But they need the support of residents and businesses to put an end to DUIs in Santa Clarita once and for all.

That is why the City is calling on local restaurants and bars to pledge to be a Heads Up business this holiday season.

To sign up, visit the website and click on the “Drunk Driving” tab. There businesses can add their name to the list of local businesses committed to the safety of their patrons and the community as a whole. Simply pledge to:

  • Educate staff and patrons on the dangers of drinking and driving.
  • Follow all applicable laws regarding alcohol sales.
  • Never overserve.
  • Help patrons find a safe ride home.

Heads Up businesses would join the City in offering rideshare vouchers to patrons in need and will also display the Heads Up signage in their establishments through the use of window clings and bar coasters.

“By working together, we can help protect our families and our communities. Please encourage your favorite spot to sign up today,” stated City Communications Division Manager Carrie Lujan in a press release.
