The City of Santa Clarita is set to provide its three Public Library locations as cooling centers due to “excessive heat” warning as temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees.

As temperatures are rising in the Santa Clarita Valley, starting Tuesday the three branches of the Public Library are to be used as cooling centers available to the public.

On Tuesday through Friday, temperatures are forecasted to reach between 104 and 109 degrees, according to officials with the National Weather Service.

While the libraries are open to the public, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) is placing current orders related to COVID-19 at each branch, requiring all to wear a mask despite their vaccination status, according to officials.

As residents may expect fire danger throughout the week, the City of Santa Clarita reminds residents to be prepared by carrying an emergency supply kit and having a family action plan.

Residents who do not have access to air conditioning are encouraged to take advantage of these free cooling centers, according to officials.

The public should stay hydrated throughout the day, wear sunscreen and avoid going outside during the hottest hours, according to LADPH.

Officials are also urging Santa Clarita residents to not leave children and pets in cars and to be aware of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke.

Residents and business owners, including people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs in Los Angeles County can call 2-1-1 for emergency preparedness information and other referral services, according to LADPH.

“While it is very important that everyone take special care of themselves, it is equally important that we reach out and check on others, in particular those who are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of high temperatures, including children, the elderly and their pets,” said Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis.

The libraries acting as cooling centers are:

• The Old Town Newhall Library 24500 Main Street Santa Clarita, CA 91321
• Valencia Library 23743 W. Valencia Boulevard Santa Clarita, CA 91355

The Santa Clarita cooling centers are set to be open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 pm, and Friday 10 am to 6 pm, according to officials.
