Santa Clarita Ranked Eighth Safest Mid-Size City In America

Santa Clarita was ranked the eighth safest mid-size city in America based on a study of 2020 statistics released on Tuesday.

Thorough analysis of crime statistics across the country during 2020 revealed that the City of Santa Clarita can be considered the eighth safest mid-size city in America by AdvisorSmith’s criterion.

AdvisorSmith, a leading information resource for business advice and research, analyzed crime data from a federal database with the intention of determining the safest cities across the United States by city size with Santa Clarita ranked within the top ten safest cities in America.

“We examined 3,115 cities for violent and property crimes to create a proprietary crime score,” read Advisor Smith’s study. “We based each city’s safety ranking upon its crime score and categorized our data by city size to find the top 10 safest small, midsize, and large cities in the country.”

Cities were divided into one of three groups based on population, with small cities having populations between 10,000 to 99,999 residents, mid-size cities from 100,000 to 300,000 residents and large cities having more than 300,000 residents, according to AdvisorSmith officials.

“Towns with populations below 10,000 were excluded from this study,” officials said.

Santa Clarita, for the second year in a row, ranked the eighth safest city as the violent crime rate was sited 4 per 1,000 residents and has a property crime score of 9.1 per 1,000 people, according to the study.

Santa Clarita had a total crime score of 20.5, an improvement of  0.4 compared to last year’s results.

Despite crime rankings being low, the City of Santa Clarita Valley still sees different crime trends such as catalytic converter thefts and drug related incidents.

Santa Clarita ranked higher than other midsize cities in the general vicinity such as Irvine (#9), Simi Valley (#10), and Glendale (#15).

Also released on Tuesday, WalletHub’s study on the safest cities in America, including metrics of nonphysical forms of danger like coronavirus-related deaths, ranked Santa Clarita the 50th safest city in America.

“To determine where Americans can feel most protected against life’s hazards, including nonphysical forms of danger, WalletHub compared more than 180 U.S. cities across 44 key metrics,” read a statement from WalletHub. “The data set ranges from COVID-19 deaths in the past week per capita and assaults per capita to the unemployment rate and road quality.”

In December, AdvisorSmith ranked Santa Clarita the fifth safest city to live in California.

And back in August of 2019, Santa Clarita was ranked as one of the best cities to raise a child. Partially due to over 30 parks throughout the city as well as all the other recreation options available to parents with children.

In addition, Santa Clarita public schools also routinely rank in the top 10 percent among school systems.

Officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station continuously work with the City, the County and the public to determine areas where high crime occurs to conduct frequent crime suppression operations to keep those areas of the community safe.

“The AdvisorSmith study just showcases why our Santa Clarita community is such a wonderful place to work, live and raise a family.”

  1. Our Sheriff are the best!! We appreciate all they do for us and our community. 🙏🏼

  2. Our city really is awesome. Blessed to live here.

  3. Crime can always look good when the Sheriffs don’t take reports. They are notorious for that here in SCV. I guess they take a few now as we dropped from #1 to #8.

  4. Still a good job by local leaders and LE not to adopt the woke policies of other cities and eliminate crime reducing measures. With the increase in crime overall because of measures passed at the state level (prop 47, 57, AB109), I wonder where this current level of crime would have ranked us say 10 years ago before those measures? My point is all boats are sinking, we are just sinking at a lesser rate than most.

  5. We were taught in business school that there are 3 kinds of lies: Statistics, statistics and statistics.
With the recent increase of Unhoused persons being dropped off in this valley perpetuating another criminal/mental element to our community(starting fires, brandishing knives in stores, and sleeping in bus benches), and gangs coming from Palmdale to steal catalytic converters in droves, it’s clear that OLD statistics are being used. Writer of the article needs to be more conscious of the community issues and our current status, not using data from 10 or 20 years ago that developers touted to entice families to our valley.
