What’s Up, Doc? Carrots Recalled By Grimmway Farms Due To Salmonella

This summer, global produce company Grimmway Farms announced the voluntary recall of several carrot products due to a reported contamination of Salmonella, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall of several carrot products was announced by global produce company Grimmway Farms this summer, thanks to a reported contamination of Salmonella.

“The recall was initiated as a result of a routine, internal company test,” said Grimmway Farms President and CEO Jeff Huckaby. “The health of our customers and the integrity of our products are our highest priorities, and we will continue to monitor and communicate as additional information is available.”

Two types of carrots by the Bunny Luv brand, one by Cal-Organic, two by O Organic and one by Grimmway Farms were recalled due to the Salmonella contamination scare, according to FDA officials.

In addition to the retail-packed products listed, the company recalled certain shredded carrots and chopped (chunk) carrots that had been sold to food manufacturers and distributors, according to public health officials.

“To date, no illnesses have been linked to this recall, but Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” FDA officials stated. “All affected food manufacturers, food service distributors, and retail customers have been notified with much of the product having been recaptured before being available for consumption.”

Healthy people who have been infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, health officials state.

In rare circumstances, the FDA reports that infection with Salmonella can lead to the organism entering the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

“Grimmway Farms also has requested that direct customers notify their customers of this recall,” FDA officials stated. “Grimmway Farms is issuing this press release and keeping the U.S. Food and Drug Administration informed of its recall process to assure that consumers are properly alerted and informed.”

  1. I bet these carrots were packed in those reusable plastic containers that retailers use in their stores (Ralphs, Wal-Mart, etc). Those plastic storage containers are DISGUSTING! Stop packing fresh consumables in storage containers that can harbor salmonella!!
