Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Patient Tower Wins National Award For Building Design

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has been recognized by a professional organization for its new patient tower’s design.

Representatives for Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia announced the establishment had been awarded a National Award of Merit in the Healthcare Facilities category by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) for the design and construction of its patient tower, the hospital said in a statement.

“We are very pleased that our beautiful new patient tower has received this recognition,” said Marlee Lauffer, president of the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation.

Having won the Award of Merit, the project is now automatically a nominee for the Award of Excellence in the Healthcare Facilities category, the highest honor in that category.

The patient tower faced challenges due to its location near three of Henry Mayo’s existing buildings, making it a tight fit, said a spokesperson for the hospital. HMC Architects’ design team created a solution by pulling the tower’s foundation away from the nearby buildings and cantilevering C-section rooms over a neighboring building.

A representative for the hospital added information about the interior of the building, which features large windows and a sunken courtyard created an outdoor feel in the building to help patients relax and heal. Each patient room has a view of the surrounding valley. Additionally, floor-to-ceiling windows provide waiting areas with natural light.

Lauffer elaborated on the patient tower’s impact, “From the day it opened last October it has been a place of healing and comfort for our patients and their families.”

All winners of DBIA’s awards are scheduled to be recognized on Oct. 29 at the Design-Build Conference and Expo Awards Ceremony.
