Career Night For Hart Alumni Tyler Glasnow

About ten years ago, Tyler Glasnow was walking across the stage at his Hart High School graduation. Now, he is proving why he is one of MLB’s best pitchers.

Glasnow had been dominant in both of his previous starts for the Tampa Bay Rays, but the 27 year-old took his game to the next level Monday evening against the Texas Rangers.

Out of the gate, Glasnow set the tone for how the rest of the night was going to go, striking out the side. To make his first inning more impressive, all three strikeouts were swinging and on different pitches. Isaiah Kiner-Falefa was the first victim and was sent back to the dugout on a 98 mph fastball. Next up was David Dahl who took a whiff at a Glasnow curve before Joey Gallo finished the inning trying to make contact with a slider.

Glasnow would strike out the side again in the third inning and at that point in the game he was yet to allow a baserunner. The Rangers first baserunner came in the fourth inning when Glasnow surrendered his only walk of the evening. Glasnow would strike out the side for a third time in the sixth inning.

In total, Glasnow would strike out a career high 14 batters in 7.2 innings of work. He was pulled with two outs in the eighth inning after 102 pitches. He only allowed three Rangers to reach base; one walk and two singles, with one coming in the fifth inning and the other in the eighth.

Despite pitching very well in his first two starts of the season, Glasnow was yet to have a win on the season. That was almost the case again on Monday. The Rays won 1-0 and the lone run of the game came on Willy Adames home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Rays also won 1-0 on Opening Day with Glasnow pitching, but the run came after he was pulled, so he did not get credit for the win despite his great efforts on the mound.

With this outing, Glasnow has cemented his name in the 2021 American League Cy Young conversation, given annually to each league’s best pitcher. Glasnow will get his next opportunity to pitch on Saturday as The Tampa Bay Rays travel to face the New York Yankees.
