CIF Reverses Stance On Simultaneous Club, High School Sports

In the event of a return to competition in high school sports, student-athletes will not be permitted to compete simultaneously in prep and club sports, according to a release from the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State office on Wednesday.

Previously, CIF officials had suspended their bylaws, which prevented high school athletes from participating on a club or travel team in the same sport during the high school season in an effort to expand the opportunity for play.

The change in policy was prompted by the release of a new sports guidance document, “Outdoor and Indoor Youth and Recreational Adult Sports” from the Governor’s Office and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) on Dec. 14.

The document included new language related to how athletes should group themselves.

“Athletes and coaches should cohort by team, and refrain from participating with more than one team over the same season or time period,” the release reads.

In response to this guidance, the CIF state office has rescinded its previous suspension of CIF Bylaws 600-605, concerning outside competition.

“A student on a high school team becomes ineligible if the student competes in a contest on an “outside” team in the same sport, during the student’s high school season of sport,” reads CIF Bylaw 605.

Student-athletes that have previously participated in club sports are not now ineligible to play in CIF competition, were there to be a return to play, the release notes.

As of Thursday, with the vast majority of counties in California, including Los Angeles County still under the most restrictive, ‘Purple’ tier, of the state’s “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” reopening plan, which makes a return to prep sports still unlikely for the immediate future.
