Dodgers Tie MLB Solo Home Run Record – Santa Clarita Sports Report – June 25, 2018

Santa Clarita High School Football

The summer is for passing leagues, and many tournaments got underway last weekend.

LA Rams 7on7 Passing Championships

Valencia finished 5-1 with wins over Oaks Christian (a little revenge, maybe?), Arleta, Agoura, Notre Dame and Antelope Valley.

Hart finished 2-3 with wins over St. Francis and Cathedral.

Trinity Classic 7v7 Passing Tournament

Trinity won their own tournament, knocking off Vasquez in triple overtime to get the victory.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers swept the Mets at CitiField over the weekend, and Sunday’s win might’ve been the sweetest: seven solo home runs by Dodgers hitters in an 8-7 win, tying a Major League Baseball record. Justin Turner’s 11th inning bomb sealed the win.

At 41-35, L.A. has shown a magnificent turnaround. They are 15-5 in the month of June, and well ahead of the rest of the league in home runs for the month.

This will be a big week for this club, as L.A. opens a ten game homestand against the Cubs tonight. Kenta Maeda totes the slab tonight, with first pitch coming at 7:00. Listen live as always on your hometown station, KHTS FM 98.1.

KERSHAW: The Dodgers talisman returned to the mound on Saturday, and while he had an underwhelming three innings of work, the good news is just that–Kershaw is back at work.

INJURIES: Chris Taylor is day-to-day with a hamstring injury. He did not see the field in the Mets series and will probably need another week of rest.

KEMP STARRING: Matt Kemp has jumped ahead of Nationals superstar Bryce Harper for second in outfielder All-Star voting. It is looking more and more like Kemp will star the All-Star Game wearing Dodger Blue. Whoever bet on that in Vegas is going to cash in.

Santa Clarita Blue Heat

The Blue Heat won the battle of the top two teams in the United Women’s Soccer West Conference with Calgary Foothills Sunday, shutting out previously unbeaten Calgary 2-0 at The Master’s University.

Jacey Pederson earned player of the match honors for helping the Blue Heat defence preserve the clean sheet.

SC is 4-1-2 and can close even more ground on Calgary next Saturday when they travel north of the border to square off again.

2018 FIFA World Cup

It’s mystifying how the sport of soccer is not embedded in the American psyche like it is around the world. The excitement, the drama–is second to none.

The final ten minutes of Group B were nothing short of spectacular, with three out of the four teams all having realistic opportunities to advance, for one reason or another (looking at you, referee for the Portugal/Iran match).

In the end, the group shaped up the way most people predicted with Spain and Portugal advancing to the knockout round with five points each. Spain finishes 1st due to the third tiebreaker of goals scored and Portugal 2nd.

In Group A, Uruguay and Russia played each other for first place, and South Americans asserted their class over the hosts with a 3-0 win to claim the top spot.
