Former Hart High School Teammates Shine On MLB Opening Weekend

All five Santa Clarita players on MLB rosters made an appearance on Opening Weekend, but it was former Hart Pitchers, Tyler Glasnow and Trevor Bauer, that stole the show.

Glasnow (Hart ‘11) was part of an Opening Day pitcher duel that saw his Tampa Bay Rays beat the Miami Marlins 1-0. This was Glasnow’s first Opening Day start. 2021 presents Glasnow with the opportunity to take over as the ace of the Rays pitching staff after the departure of Blake Snell. On Opening Day, Glasnow proved that he deserves to be at the top of the Rays pitching rotation. He pitched six innings and was almost unhittable. After a two out hit in the first inning, Glasnow did not allow another base runner. He was pulled from the game after the sixth inning, having given up just one hit and striking out six.

Bauer (Hart ‘08) made his Los Angeles Dodgers debut on Friday and lived up to the hype that was surrounding him all offseason. For the first six innings of the game Bauer was absolutely dominant, making Rockies hitters look silly. It was not until the seventh inning that he gave up his first hit of the game. He ended up getting pulled later in the seventh inning after giving up four runs, which slightly tarnished his incredible first six innings. In all, Bauer pitched 6.1 innings, gave up four earned runs, and struck out 10 batters. Bauer also recorded his first career RBI in the seventh inning on a sacrifice bunt.

Keston Hiura (Valencia ‘14) started all three games at first base for the Milwaukee Brewers on Opening Weekend. The 24 year old struggled in all three games this week, only reaching base safely once. He was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth inning of Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Twins. Hiura also scored an important run in the bottom of the ninth in the Brewers Opening Day game after reaching on an error. The Brewers rely on Hiura to produce at the top of the lineup, but a tough first few games will put pressure on the young star.

Scott Barlow (Golden Valley ‘11) made his lone appearance of the week on Opening Day. He entered the game in the seventh inning, with his Kansas City Royals leading 10-9 over the Texas Rangers. He made quick work of the Rangers batters in a three up, three down inning that included two strikeouts. Barlow came back onto the mound for the eighth inning. He gave up a leadoff single and then struck out the next two batters. After the strikeouts he lost his control and walked the next two batters before being pulled from the game. Still, Barlow did not surrender a run in 1.2 innings pitched and had four strikeouts.

Pat Valaika (Hart ‘10) played Sunday in the Baltimore Orioles series finale Sunday against the Boston Red Sox. He entered the game, in the third inning, as a pinch runner for Austin Hays who left the game with a right hamstring injury. After running for Hays, Valaika scored on a Trey Mancini double, extending the Orioles lead to 8-0. Valaika’s first at bat of the season came in the fourth inning against Garrett Whitlock. Valaika swung at the first pitch he saw, a 96 mph sinker, and singled up the middle. He would finish the day 1-for-3 with a run scored. If Hays’ injury lingers, Valaika could see more playing time in the coming weeks.
