Former Hart Pitchers Continue Their Stellar MLB Starts To 2021

Trevor Bauer (Hart ‘08) and Tyler Glasnow (Hart ‘11) have been two of the best pitchers in the MLB thus far. They are joined by Scott Barlow (Golden Valley ‘11), Keston Hiura (Valencia ‘14), Tommy Milone (Saugus ‘05) and Pat Valaika (Hart ‘10) to make up the six Santa Clarita players currently on MLB rosters.

Bauer made his third and fourth starts of the season last week. On Tuesday he faced off against the Colorado Rockies for the second time this season. Just as he was on Opening Weekend, Bauer dominated Rockies hitters. In seven innings, Bauer allowed just one hit while racking up nine strikeouts. The Dodgers were able to score early and often, winning the game 7-0. Bauer also started the series finale against the San Diego Padres on Sunday. The lone run he gave up in six innings was a homerun to Jake Cronenworth in the fourth inning. He added 7 more strikeouts to his season total as well. Bauer exited Sunday’s game with the Dodgers leading 2-1, however, the Padres scored 4 runs late to take the game 5-2. The loss broke up the Dodgers eight game win streak. Bauer is up to 36 strikeouts in the month of April, which is good for a $36,000 donation to “Think Together” as part of his “K’s for a Cause” initiative.

Glasnow continued his early season dominance and picked up his first two wins of the season. On Monday, Glasnow was marvelous against the Texas Rangers, pitching 7.2 innings and allowing just three baserunners, two hits and a walk. In that time he also struck out 14 Rangers batters, including striking out the side in three different innings. The Tampa Bay Rays needed Glasnow to be great, as their offense was only able to generate one run, but that was enough to get the win. On Saturday, he made his second start of the week against the New York Yankees. For the first time this season, Glasnow struggled with his control, walking four hitters in the five innings he pitched. Despite this, Glasnow gave up just one earned run and was able to pick up his second win of the year. After his first four starts, Glasnow has just a 0.73 ERA, which is good for best in the American League. His 36 strikeouts are tied for third in all of baseball with former Hart Alumni Trevor Bauer.

Barlow continued to pitch well out of the bullpen for the Kansas City Royals who have had a surprisingly good start to the season. He made three appearances last week. Barlow struggled for the first time on Monday, giving up three runs, his first of the season. He was able to bounce back on Thursday and pitched the final two innings of a 7-5 win against the Toronto Blue Jays. It was also Barlow’s first save of the season. He finished out his week by pitching a scoreless inning on Saturday. Barlow has now pitched 9.2 innings over seven appearances this season with an impressive 2.79 ERA and 13 strikeouts.

Hiura started all six games for the Milwaukee Brewers last week. On Wednesday, he made his first start of the year at second base. All of his previous games he had played first base. On the week, Hiura had two hits, but also walked five times. On Saturday, he had an RBI double in the second inning of a 7-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hiura has struggled this season and is hitting only .116. Hiura managed to get on base via walks, but strikeouts still remain a problem for the young 24 year-old. Hiura has struck out at least once in every game this season.

Milone made his lone appearance of the week on Saturday. In his first start of the season, Milone gave up two earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. He also recorded four strikeouts.

Valaika did not make an appearance for the Baltimore Orioles this week.
