Former Hart Quarterback Becomes Super Bowl Champion With Chiefs Win

Former William S. Hart High School quarterback Matt Moore became a Super Bowl champion on Sunday after the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20.

While Moore didn’t get a chance to take a snap during the big game, he was ready to go as the Chiefs’ only available backup quarterback.

Despite his backup status, Moore still contributed to the Chiefs’ championship run this season.

When Patrick Mahomes went out of their week-seven matchup with the Denver Broncos with a knee injury, Moore came in in relief and was able to take the team to a win.

Moore went on to start the next two games for the Chiefs. He dropped the first game in a close one against the Green Bay Packers but led his team to win over the Minnesota Vikings the following week.

That single win proved decisive, however, as after New England’s shocking week-17 loss against Miami, the Patriots were denied a first-round bye in the playoffs for the first season since 2009, instead going to the Chiefs.

While in place of Mahomes, Moore was steady as he threw for 659 yards, four touchdowns and one pick while he completed 64.8 percent of his passes.

With the win, Moore becomes the second former Santa Clarita high school football player to win a Super Bowl, following former Valencia running back Shane Vereen, who won one in 2014 with the New England Patriots.

It’s been quite the ride for Moore this season, who was on the sidelines of the Hart High School football field this summer, preparing for his first season as an assistant coach with the program after a year out of the NFL, when he got the call from the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs former backup, Chad Henne, had gone out with an injury in the preseason. Head Coach Andy Reid needed an experienced veteran, and they found Moore.

Now just over five months later, Moore and his teammates have reached the peak of achievement in the sport.

The future is uncertain for Moore, as he only signed a one-year deal with Kansas City, but whether he remains in football, returns to coaching or chooses any other path in life, he can forever be introduced as Super Bowl champion, Matt Moore.

  1. It was so exciting for Matt to receive a Super Bowl ring. Well deserved for years of work. I believe he holds the longest NFL career of any Santa Clarita Raised athlete.
