Former Hart Quarterback Matt Moore Advances To Super Bowl With Kansas City Chiefs

Former William S. Hart High School quarterback Matt Moore and the Kansas City Chiefs advanced to the Super Bowl with a 35-24 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, becoming the first quarterback from the Foothill League to advance to a Super Bowl since 1969.

It’s been an unexpected journey for Moore, who began the 2019 season on the sidelines of the Hart High School football field this summer preparing for his first season as an assistant coach when a preseason injury to the Chiefs’ previous backup quarterback, Chad Henne, led them to call Moore with a chance to get back into the game.

Moore answered the call, packed his bags and moved to Kansas City. Now nearly five months later, Moore is on his way to Miami for an opportunity to be a part of a Super Bowl-winning team.

While Moore is unlikely to play in the big game except in the case of an injury to Chiefs starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, he did contribute to the team’s path to the Super Bowl.

Moore came into the Chiefs game against the Denver Broncos in week seven in relief of Mahomes after a knee injury and was able to help guide the team to a victory.

“Matt gives you the confidence that he can come in,” said Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid in a press conference after the win. “I think just because he’s been around a long time and had success and the way he handles himself, people have confidence in him.”

The former Hart signal-caller went on to go 1-1 as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback the following two weeks, dropping a close game to the Green Bay Packers despite a solid outing and picking up a win against the Minnesota Vikings while he threw for 275 yards and a touchdown.

Mahomes was able to return from his injury in week 10 and Moore has been waiting in the wings since.

Moore would become the second Hart quarterback to reach a Super Bowl, following Joe Kapp, who took the Minnestoa Vikings to Superbowl IV.

The last former Foothill League player to play in a Super Bowl was Valencia alumnus Shane Vereen, who advanced to two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots in 2011 and 2014, winning one in 2014 against the Seattle Seahawks.

In addition to Foothill League players, former College of the Canyons defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul also participated in and won one Super Bowl with the New York Giants over the New England Patriots in 2011.

The Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to take on the San Francisco 49ers in the 54th Super Bowl on Sunday, February 2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami at 3:30 p.m. on FOX.

Ed. Note: Updated to include Joe Kapp, the story previously identified Moore as the first quarterback from the Foothill League to advance to a Super Bowl.
